Charged in assaults
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said a 29-year-old Transfer man faced arraignment today on assault charges in attacks against a former girlfriend and the woman's teen-age daughter Tuesday.
Police said the man struck his 34-year-old ex-girlfriend in her home in the 300 block of Tamplin Street around 8:30 a.m. and then returned to the house around 4 p.m. and got into an argument with the woman's 17-year-old daughter. Police said the suspect is accused of grabbing the girl by the neck, slamming her against a doorjamb and throwing her to the floor. She was treated at Sharon Regional Health System.
The suspect left the scene, but police in Sharpsville found him about 90 minutes later. He was returned to Sharon and arrested on charges of simple and aggravated assault.
Trailer, tractor thefts
JAMESTOWN, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said charges of receiving stolen property are pending against a 34-year-old Spring Street man in the theft of three utility trailers and two lawn tractors in the Greenville and Jamestown areas.
Police said they got a tip when the suspect sold one of the trailers to another Jamestown man. Police said they searched the suspect's property May 15 and found two other stolen trailers and two stolen lawn mowers. The victims were individuals and a construction company, police said.
Safe-boating material
CORTLAND -- Information on safe boating will be available this weekend at Mosquito Lake Park from the local Sail and Power Squadron.
The Coast Guard material to be distributed Saturday and Sunday focuses on proper use of life jackets, boating rules and regulations and information on continuing education in boating offered by the local squadron.
Certified inspectors will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days for voluntary vessel safety checks.
Lordi ordered to prison
YOUNGSTOWN -- A judge has ordered former Mahoning County commissioner Frank Lordi to report to the county jail Friday. He will then be taken to a state prison to serve 18 months for theft in office. Lordi, 54, of Canfield Township, was convicted by a common pleas court jury in 1999 but was allowed to remain free while he appealed.
Last week, the Ohio Supreme Court declined to hear his case, which prompted visiting Judge Mark K. Wiest to issue his order for Lordi to surrender and begin serving the sentence. Lordi's attorney, David L. Engler, said they might ask the high court to reconsider.
Vehicular homicide case
NILES -- Fred R. Brinsky Jr. of Youngstown has pleaded innocent in municipal court here to charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault.
His attorney, Dennis DiMartino, filed the plea Tuesday on behalf of Brinsky, 44, who remains in satisfactory condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center after a head-on automobile collision that killed 19-year-old Taylor L. Veisz of Youngstown on Salt Springs Road in Weatherfield Township around 9:40 p.m. May 19.
Ohio State Highway Patrol officials said Brinsky crossed the center line when his van struck the woman's car near Interstate 80.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 29.
Weapon indictment
CLEVELAND -- A 23-year-old Warren man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of being a felon in possession of a weapon.
Michael P. Kuntz faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The indictment says Kuntz was in possession of a .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol Dec. 16 after have been convicted of aggravated assault Aug. 1, 1996, in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
House fire investigated
WARREN -- Firefighters are investigating the cause of blaze at a Woodbine Street S.E. home early today.
The fire started around 4:12 a.m., but the one person living in the two-story frame home, a dog and two cats escaped unhurt. Several cats perished, according to reports.
