YOUNGSTOWN Black, Jewish teens head to D.C. for mission



The teens will also meet with one of Ohio's senators and members of U.S. Rep. James A Traficant Jr.'s staff.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The African-American/Jewish Dialogue is sending 22 area black and Jewish teens on a Teen Mission to Washington, D.C., set for June 8 to 11.
The dialogue is co-sponsored by Saving Our Next Generation and the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation.
Co-chairmen Rabbi Frank Muller and Cecil Monroe said the excursion gives the participants the chance to build fellowship and understanding and gain knowledge of the historical and cultural experiences of each other's communities.
The program will include tours of Jewish and black-American museums and historical sites, including the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, a visit to Howard University, an opportunity to worship in a synagogue and a black church, an evening of theater at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and a tour of the national monuments.
Meeting local legislators: The trip will also include a visit to Capitol Hill to meet with U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, and with staff members of U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. of Poland, D-17th.
Black teens attending are Leon Brock, Tristan Lewis and Sequoya Lattermore of The Rayen School; Alexis Harris, Ebony Menton and Jennie Kennedy of Austintown Fitch High School; Tanisha Howell and Teonna Richardson of Ursuline ; Trenena Spell of Cardinal Mooney; Adelina Torres of Boardman; Kelvin Turner II of Youngstown Christian School; and Brandan Washington and Whitney Washington of Chaney.
Jewish teens are Nya Aron, Michael Clebone, Sean Lipkin and Carly Froomkin of Liberty High; Sarah Clayman of Kennedy Christian; Erica Knofsky of Sharpsville ; Daniel Marlin of Neshannock ; Hollie Rawl of Howland; and Rachel Tosi of Canfield.
The trip and the entire African-American Jewish Dialogue program has been underwritten by an anonymous endowment donor of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation.
