HOWLAND -- The board of education will conduct a special meeting at 8 a.m. June 19 at Covelli Enterprises, 3900 E. Market St., to discuss strategic planning.
Campbell pupils take17th place at nationals
CAMPBELL -- Six fifth-graders from Reed Middle School took 17th place in Destination ImagiNation, a national problem solving competition at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., last weekend.
The pupils were among 52 teams that tackled a dynamic improvisation tournament, one of many events teams can qualify for within the competition.
Brittany Soroka, Marina McMasters, Gina Donofrio, Drew Janek, Lorrin Pico and Jamie Dolan qualified for the national competition after taking second place in a state competition April 22 in Hilliard.
The team, coached by Carol Dolan and Beth Donofrio, left for Knoxville on Wednesday and returned Sunday.
Classes canceledfor senior's funeral
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- There will be no classes at Kennedy Christian High School on Thursday so students can attend the funeral of senior Nicholas J. George, 18, who died in a car accident Sunday.
Peter Iacino, school president, said the parochial school was to bring in eight counselors today to help students deal with the tragedy.
The students were to have a general assembly this morning and the counselors would be available throughout the day today and Wednesday.
Services for George will 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Notre Dame Church. Graduation is still scheduled for Friday.
George, 18, of 364 Yankee Ridge Road, died when he was thrown from his car when it ran off Yankee Ridge Road near his home and struck a utility pole.
Police said he wasn't wearing a seat belt.
Power outages
BOARDMAN -- Nearly 900 homes and businesses lost power for 90 minutes Monday night and six hours this morning, east of Southern Boulevard and west of Market Street between Midlothian Boulevard and Meadowbrook Avenue.
An Ohio Edison spokesman said the power first went off about 6 p.m. Monday, when the equipment holding up a 23,000-volt line failed.
The equipment was fixed temporarily and power was restored at 7:30 p.m. Then at 1:30 a.m., company workers turned the power off to permanently fix the equipment.
Power was restored at 7:30 this morning.
Marijuana arrest
FARRELL, Pa. -- Police found small plastic bags of suspected marijuana in the pants of a Market Street man picked up on a traffic warrant from Sharon about 1 a.m. Saturday.
Henry Bruce, 29, was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and lodged in Mercer County Jail, where he remained this morning.
Indecent exposure
FARRELL, Pa. -- Police arrested a Fruit Avenue man accused of exposing himself Friday to a 13-year-old girl on her way to school in the 800 block of Union Street.
John Mortenson Jr., 30, was charged with indecent exposure, open lewdness and corruption of minors.
He was in Mercer County Jail today with bond set at $7,500.
Funds soughtfor annual regatta
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Allegheny County officials were to be in Harrisburg this week, looking for state help in keeping the popular, but cash-strapped Three Rivers Regatta afloat.
Allegheny County Executive Jim Roddey said he had found two sponsors willing to pledge $50,000 each, but declined to identify them.
Regatta organizers need to raise as much as $1 million or cancel or cut back the four-day event, to open Aug. 2 at Pittsburgh's Point State Park and surrounding areas.
At least four sponsors have dropped out.
The free event, in its 24th year, attracts about 1.5 million people.
