Electricity goes out
BOARDMAN -- Nearly 900 homes and businesses lost power for 90 minutes Monday night after the equipment that held up a power line failed.
The 877 homes and businesses that lost power were east of South Avenue and west of Southern Boulevard between Midlothian Boulevard and Meadowbrook Avenue. An Ohio Edison spokesman said the power first went out at about 6 p.m. Monday, when the equipment holding up a 23,000-volt line failed. The equipment was fixed temporarily and power was restored at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Ohio Edison is not sure why the equipment failed.
Then, at 1:30 a.m. today, Ohio Edison workers turned the power off to 238 homes to fix the equipment. Power was restored at 7:30 a.m.
Campbell pupils take17th place at nationals
CAMPBELL -- Six fifth-graders from Reed Middle School took 17th place in Destination ImagiNation, a national problem-solving competition at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn., last weekend.
The pupils were among 52 teams that tackled a dynamic improvisation tournament, one of many events teams can qualify for within the competition.
Brittany Soroka, Marina McMasters, Gina Donofrio, Drew Janek, Lorrin Pico and Jamie Dolan qualified for the national competition after taking second place in a state competition April 22 in Hilliard.
The team, coached by Carol Dolan and Beth Donofrio, left for Knoxville on Wednesday and returned Sunday.
Austintown burglaries
AUSTINTOWN -- Two burglaries -- one involving a fire -- and an attempted burglary were reported on Allendale Avenue over the holiday weekend.
The fire started on a porch rug about 5:30 p.m. Monday at 3303 Allendale. It was extinguished by a neighbor and the fire department. No one was home.
While investigating the fire, police found that the screen on a rear window had been removed and a bedroom had been ransacked. Two sets of house keys were stolen.
Police also responded to a burglary call at 5:45 p.m. Monday at 3251 Allendale in which a computer, VCR, and Sony Playstation were stolen.
At 11:45 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a report of an attempted burglary at 3695 Allendale, where a rear window was broken.
Pupil drug sale probe
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a 14-year-old Austintown Middle School pupil sold marijuana Friday morning to another 14-year-old pupil on the bus going to school.
Police were contacted by Principal Dan Bokesch.
The youth who reportedly sold the marijuana obtained it from a 15-year-old Austintown student, police said. The buyer rolled the marijuana into two $20 bills and gave it to a 14-year-old girl to hold in her English textbook, according to police reports.
The girl told police she was not aware that the money contained marijuana.
Classes canceledfor senior's funeral
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- There will be no classes at Kennedy Christian High School on Thursday so students can attend the funeral of senior Nicholas J. George, 18, who died in a car accident Sunday.
Peter Iacino, school president, said the parochial school was to bring in eight counselors today to help students deal with the tragedy.
The students were to have a general assembly this morning, and the counselors would be available throughout the day today and Wednesday.
Services for George will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Notre Dame Church. Graduation is scheduled for Friday.
George, 18, of 364 Yankee Ridge Road, died when he was thrown from his car when it ran off Yankee Ridge Road near his home and struck a utility pole.
Police said he wasn't wearing a seat belt.
