YOUNGSTOWN B'nai B'rith to honor YSU history professor

YOUNGSTOWN -- B'nai B'rith of Youngstown will honor Dr. Saul Friedman at the 30th Guardian of the Menorah Tribute Banquet June 3 at Squaw Creek Country Club.
The Guardian of the Menorah Tribute is given each year to an outstanding member of the Jewish community who has demonstrated his or her devotion to the cause of youth and general community through service and commitment.
During his career, he focused on helping others understand the magnitude, brutality and historical context of the Holocaust. As a professor of history for the past 32 years at Youngstown State University, he has brought this understanding to his students as well as the community.
Friedman received his bachelor's degree from Kent State University in 1959, his master's degree in 1962 and his doctorate in 1969, both from Ohio State University.
He will be publishing a textbook on the Holocaust this summer. Some of Friedman's other books include, "No Haven for the Oppressed: Official U.S. Policy toward European Jewish Refugees," "Without Future: The Plight of Syrian Jewry," and "Jews and the American Slave Trade."
Films: He also has written and produced 11 documentaries and has received numerous Emmy nominations and regional Emmy Awards for his work. Some of the titles include: "Robert Clary: A Memoir of Liberation," "Voice of Giants: A Century of American Zionism," and "the Mauthausen Memorial Concert."
Friedman also has been the recipient of a number of honors. He was named Distinguished University Professor at Youngstown State University six times, received the Louis P. Brandeis Award from Youngstown Zionist District in 1989, and was awarded the Marvin ITTS Leadership Award in 1985 and the Triumphant Spirit Award for teaching Holocaust in 1999, both from the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation.
He has dedicated much of his time as a board member and local president of the Zionist Organization of America and is its regional vice president. He also represents the ZOA as trustee to the Schermer Charitable Trust for the past 22 years. He has worked extensively with youths as an adviser to Jewish student groups at YSU and as director of Holocaust/Judaic studies at the university.
The banquet's general chairmen are Michael Froomkin and Andrew Moyer. Funds raised from the banquet will benefit B'nai B'rith Youth Services Appeal. There will be no solicitation at the dinner.
