YOUNGSTOWN -- A concert by Funny Fellows of Bratislava, Slovakia, will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m. June 12 in St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church Activity Center, 3801 Shady Run Road. The Slovak Embassy is putting on a series of concerts across the United States to celebrate the opening of its new embassy in Washington D.C. in June. Sponsoring the affair locally are American Slovak Cultural Association of Mahoning Valley and Youngstown Sister Cities Inc.
Kids theater classes
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngsters will take center stage in summer classes by Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre. Classes will meet June 18 to 22.
"Storybook-Live," for children in first to third grades, emphasizes the development of body, voice and imagination skills through creative movement and play. "Tales from 'Toon Town'" will allow pupils with previous class or stage experience to portray their favorite cartoon characters in a tale they will create and share with family and friends. Local magician Shawn Lockaton will conduct "Magic and Illusions" for second- through sixth-graders. In "From the Page to the Stage," fourth- through sixth-graders will create and perform their own scripted story. Seventh- through 12-graders may enroll in "Introduction to Musical Theatre," which will offer basic instruction in auditioning, singing and simple choreography. YSU professor recieves Ohio Arts Council award
YOUNGSTOWN -- Philip Brady, a poet and professor of English at Youngstown State University, has received a total of $6,000 from Ohio Arts Council. Brady was one of 90 people to be awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship, which the arts council says is reserved for "artists of exceptional talent based on the quality of their work." In addition to the $5,000 award, Brady also received $1,000 toward a poetry reading event.
Other regional groups that received Ohio Arts Council funding are: Warren Civic Music Association, $2,000 for its Performing Arts on Tour series; and Shining Reflections Vocational Programs of East Liverpool, $3,000 for organizational development.
Chan is big spender
HOLLYWOOD -- Jackie Chan's "Highbinders" will be the biggest budget for any Hong Kong movie, set at $35 million. And while British comic Lee Evans may co-star with Chan in the supernatural thriller, director Reginald Hudlin may be kicked out.
