SHARON, Pa. -- Penn State Shenango at 147 Shenango Ave.is offering three summer programs for children. To register, call (724) 983-2906 or stop by the registration office in Sharon Hall 201. The programs are:
U Basketball fundamentals camp: For boys and girls in grades four to six, running June 25-29. The cost is $99.
U College for Kids: For two age groups, 7-9 and 10-12, meeting July 16-20 and July 23-27. Participants can choose from six programs. Cost is $125 and scholarships are available.
U College for Teens: A summer enrichment program for teens 13-15 meets July 23-27 with programs in the arts, science and technology. Cost is $125 and scholarships are available.
Avoid this road
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Neshannock Township police are advising motorists to avoid state Route 18 south of Maitland Lane.
Road crews will be paving the area in the next week and there will be long delays.
Airport to get grant
EAST LIVERPOOL -- The Columbiana County Airport will receive a $150,000 federal grant to fund taxi-way reconstruction. The grant also is expected to pay for a runway safety study, a layout plan and an environmental assessment necessary for a future runway extension.
U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. of Poland, D-17th, announced the grant. The money will come from the Federal Aviation Administration's airport improvement program. The airport is along County Airport Road in Madison Township.
Volunteers needed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby needs about 75 more volunteers for this year's race, June 16-17 on Fifth Avenue.
The events needs about 100 volunteers total.
Anyone willing to work at the event should leave their name and phone number with the derby office by calling (330) 726-5443 or at the city council office.
Beauty contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Miss Youngstown Beauty and Talent Pageant will be July 19 during the Greater Youngstown Italian Fest at Canfield Fairgrounds.
Participants must be between the ages of 16 and 23, be of Italian descent, and submit an application form and a photograph.
A $500 savings bond will be awarded to the winner. Second and third places each receive a $100 bond.

Income-tax plan
CRAIG BEACH -- Village officials plan to implement a 1-percent income tax by July to avoid going into deficit spending.
Council gave a first reading on the income tax proposal at a special meeting last week and will give the two final readings this week, said Mayor Camille Gaia III. The tax should take effect July 1.
The village would finish the year with a deficit of $14,000 to $15,000 without an income tax generating about $70,000 annually, Gaia said.
Village voters repealed a 1-percent income tax in 1998.
Pavilion project
COITSVILLE -- Despite several days of rain last week, a new roof and two skylights are in place at the Coitsville Historical Society pavilion. Students from the New Castle School of Trades offered free labor to reshingle the roof.
CHS members are still looking for donations to buy concrete for the pavilion's floor, as part of an effort to complete the building in 2002. Jim Taylor, NCST instructor, said his students would offer free labor for other pavilion projects.
