LEHIGH
Linsey Kokal, a freshman swimmer from Howland (Warren Kennedy High), was presented the John S. Steckbeck Award at the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner May 12. The award recognizes the top first-year female student-athlete at Lehigh.
Kokal was named the team's Most Valuable Performer. She set a school record in the 200-yard breaststroke, and she had the second-fastest time in school history in the 100 butterfly. Kokal was Lehigh's top scorer in dual-meet competition and also at the Patriot League championships, where she won the 100 butterfly and 200 breaststroke and placed third in the 200 individual medley.
Kokal placed fifth overall at the league meet. She also made the Patriot League Swimming and Diving Team.
She is the daughter of Rita and Leon Kokal.
BALDWIN-WALLACE
Amanda Roble, a sophomore center fielder on the softball team from Columbiana, was selected to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference first team.
Roble, after transferring from Ashland University, had a .241 batting average with 27 hits and 16 RBIs, while hitting around .340 in OAC games. She also was outstanding on defense, with a .960 fielding average and five assists.
Roble helped the Yellow Jackets to a school-record-tying 28 wins (against 16 losses), and a 13-5 OAC mark.
The daughter of Carolyn and Herbert Roble, Amanda has a 3.7 grade-point average as a biology major.
While at Columbiana, she won four varsity softball letters, and was a three-time pick to the All-Tri-County League and All-Columbiana County first teams.
WESTMINSTER
Three Youngstown-area student-athletes won year-end awards during the Winter/Spring Sports Banquet held recently.
J.P. Maszczak, a three-year letterman for the basketball team, won the men's Senior Scholar-Athlete Award for having the highest grade-point average among graduating seniors.
Maszczak carried a 3.76 grade-point average as a major in biology.
Chad Phillips and Robin Thayer won Most Valuable Player Awards for basketball.
Phillips, a senior from Warren JFK High, led Westminster in scoring (24.3) and rebounding (8.8) averages per game, helping the Titans to a 19-6 record. He ranked No. 2 in the nation in scoring in NCAA Div. II, while also being named to the Verizon Academic All-America First Team with a 3.589 GPA.
Thayer, a junior from South Range High, led the Westminster women in scoring for the third straight year with a 16.2 grade-point average. Thayer helped the Titans to a 16-9 record a 12-game winning streak to end the season.
High school volleyball standouts Katie Barger from New Middletown (Springfield) and Lauren Lalama from Columbiana will attend Westminster.
Barger, a three-year letter-winner at the setter's position, set school records for sets, assists and assist percentage. She had 422 assists on 1,192 sets as a senior, and 955 assists on 3,091 sets in her career, with an assist percentage of 35.4 her senior year.
Barger made the All-Inter-County League first team as a junior and senior.
The daughter of Rhonda and Rick Barger, Katie plans to major in elementary education.
Lalama was a hitter and defensive specialist her senior year, after being a setter earlier in her high school career.
She registered 94 kills and 25 service aces while serving as co-captain as a senior.
Lalama also was a two-time all-district honorable mention, and made All-Tri-County League second team and All-Columbiana County honorable mention.
She also was MVP of the 2000 Lisbon volleyball Camp, and won the Columbiana High School Senior Clipper Award.
Lalama also played softball and won both the Lady Clipper Award and Coaches Award, and was the football homecoming queen.
The daughter of Paulette and Frank Lalama, Lauren is a National Honor Society student and plans to major in psychology.
OHIO NORTHERN
Bill Narducci from Campbell (Ursuline) has concluded his baseball career.
Narducci, a four-year starter in the outfield, has been named to the Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference first team.
He had 163 career hits in 164 games to rank No. 5 on ONU's all-time list.
Narducci also had a 3.7 GPA as a major in civil engineering, and has accepted a job with Lincoln Electric of Cleveland.
BASEBALL ALL-STARS
Youngstown-area players were selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division III All-Mideast Region Baseball Team.
Named to the first team were Rick Mulinix, a senior catcher for Mount Union College from Beloit (West Branch), and Matt DeSalvo, a junior pitcher for Marietta College from New Castle (Union Area).
Gaining honorable mention were Brian Frasco, a senior designated pitcher for Hiram College from Hubbard (Ursuline).
Mulinix batted .391 with 27 RBIs, 26 stolen bases and nine homers.
DeSalvo posted a 15-1-2 record and a 1.58 ERA with 179 strikeouts and 47 walks.
Frasco batted .432 with 47 RBIs, 44 runs scored, five homers and four triples.
Frasco also made the All-North Coast Athletic Conference first team as a designated hitter, and second team as a pitcher. He had a 4-4 pitching record with 43 strikeouts.
ALL-AMC TEAM
Three Youngstown-area softball players -- Katie Lamport of Malone College, Shannon Kohl of Walsh University and Angie Svagerko of Mount Vernon Nazarene -- were named to the All-American Mideast Conference team.
Lamport, a sophomore designated hitter from Poland, and Kohl, a sophomore center fielder from Austintown Fitch, were picked to the first team. Svagerko, a senior second baseman from Campbell, made the second team.
Lamport tied for the team lead in homers with three, was second in hits (39-for-123), third in batting average (.317) and fourth in RBIs (20). She also scored 17 runs, had nine doubles and was 2-for-3 in stolen bases. Lamport helped Malone to a 27-17 record, including 17-7 in AMC for third place among 16 teams.
Kohl led Walsh in batting (.468 average) and hits (59-for-126) and runs (33), and was tied for the lead in triples with four, as the Cavaliers posted a 20-22 record, including 13-10 in the AMC. She also was named to the NAIA Region IX All-Region team.
Kohl ranks No. 1 on Walsh's all-time list of career batting averages with .418. She also is No. 9 in hits with 115, and tied for No. 9 in runs with 69.
AKRON
Steve Bowers of West Middlesex and Justin Lucas of Sharpsville won letters with the baseball team.
Bowers, a senior center fielder, led the Zips in on-base percentage (.468) and stolen bases (27-for-29). He also had the fourth-best batting average (.331) on 53-for-160, while adding 31 RBIs and 43 runs scored.
Lucas, a sophomore pitcher, posted a 3-7 record with an 8.81 ERA, 43 strikeouts and 48 walks.
Akron registered a 16-34 record, including 9-18 in the Mid-American Conference.
