Officials to give raiseto summer helpers
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County's summer help is getting a raise. The county salary board agreed Thursday to pay these temporary employees $7 an hour. That reflects about an extra $5 a week over last year, said Commissioner Brian Burick. He explained that last year, workers were paid $6 an hour for a 40-hour workweek. That included a paid lunch hour, he said.
This year summer workers will work a 35-hour week with no paid lunch hour, Burick said. Salary board members agreed that summer workers can only work a total of 420 hours this year. Anyone hired to supervise bridge crews, which usually consist of people picking up trash and weeds near county bridges, will be paid $9.25 an hour.
Campus officer named
SHARON, Pa. -- Dr. Fred Leeds, director of academic affairs at Penn State Shenango, has been named interim campus executive officer.
Leeds will direct campus operations following the resignation of Dr. William C. Puffer from that post at the end of June. Puffer served as campus executive officer since May 1998 and said he is leaving to pursue other interests. Leeds will handle the job until the university names a successor to Puffer.
Facing assault charge
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Charles H. Brady, 29, of East Pine Street, was in jail on $25,000 bond today, charged with assaulting hospital personnel at United Community Hospital and two state police troopers.
Police said the Brady was intoxicated and became violent while being treated around 12:15 a.m. Thursday. Police arrested him and found a marijuana smoking pipe in his possession. He then assaulted two troopers, police said. He was arraigned late Thursday before District Justice Lawrence Silvis on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, making terroristic threats, harassment, disorderly conduct, public intoxication, criminal mischief and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Pleads guilty to charge
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- A Pittsburgh man caught with a small amount of marijuana in his car on Interstate 79 early Thursday pleaded guilty to a drug possession charge later in the day. District Justice Lawrence Silvis said David M. Dailey, 19, was brought to his office for arraignment and insisted on pleading guilty to possession of a small amount of suspected marijuana.
Dailey said he just wanted to get home for the holiday and decided to plead guilty, Silvis said. State police arrested him in Jackson Township after spotting the drug in his car around 2:40 a.m. Police were called because Dailey's car had become disabled in the southbound lanes. Silvis said he gave Dailey credit for one night in jail and suspended the rest of his 30-day jail sentence when Daily paid $500 in fine and court costs.
Suspected crack found
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 23-year-old man was arrested on Otis Street on Thursday afternoon after police found he was carrying 26 small plastic bags of suspected crack.
Officers approached the Oxford Avenue man when they noticed he was on property owned by the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority. The YMHA has a restraining order preventing the man from entering their property.
The man walked away from police as they approached him. The drugs were found in his front pants pocket.
Robbery at Burger King
YOUNGSTOWN -- A manager at Burger King, 3525 Mahoning Ave., told police she was robbed by a skinny teen-age boy about 5:30 p.m. Thursday as she walked out of the fast-food restaurant with a bank deposit bag.
The woman said that when she walked toward her car, the boy, who had been standing in the parking lot, approached her with a gun and demanded the money. The boy took the bag and ran through the Mahoning Avenue Plaza.
Police recovered a green hooded sweat shirt and blue stocking cap the boy had removed as he ran.
