Memorial Day weekend events, as provided by sponsoring communities:
MAHONING COUNTY
AUSTINTOWN -- The American Legion Post 301 and VFW Post 4237 are sponsoring a parade, which will begin at 10:45 a.m. Monday at the Phar-Mor parking lot on Mahoning Avenue. It will travel down Idaho Road to Fitch High School, where a program honoring veterans will start at 11 a.m. The American Legion and VFW honor guards will lead the parade, followed by Youngstown State University's ROTC firing squad and the Fitch High School marching band. Former Marine James Rapone will be guest speaker; Joseph McCormick is parade Marshal.
BERLIN CENTER -- Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Western Reserve Middle School, U.S. Route 224. State Rep. Ken Carano of Austintown, D-65th, will deliver a talk titled "I Am the Luckiest American Alive."
BOARDMAN -- The Kiwanis Club will have a breakfast at 8 a.m. Monday at the Community Center, Boardman Park. Groups taking part in the 10 a.m. parade will assemble at 9:30 a.m. at Center Middle School and will march up Market Street to U.S. Route 224 and to the Maag Outdoor Arts Theater in the park. Larry P. Saxton, former schools superintendent, will be grand marshal and speaker. The Rev. David Joachim of Westminster Presbyterian Church will conduct a prayer service and the Boardman Symphonic Band will provide music. In case of rain, services will be in the Center Middle School auditorium.
BOARDMAN -- A parade and ceremony honoring Veterans will precede a marker dedication ceremony, set for noon Monday in Boardman Township Park. Representatives of the Ohio Bicentennial Commission will dedicate the marker to commemorate the historic value of the St. James Meeting House, built in 1828 and moved to the park in 1972. The Boardman Historical Society will host.
CAMPBELL -- American Legion Post 560 and VFW Post 4723 will meet at 8 a.m. Monday at the legion hall and Memorial Day services will begin at 9 a.m. at St. John's Cemetery, followed by services at Archangel Michael, St. John's Russian, St. Nicholas and St. Michael cemeteries. A program begins at 11 a.m. at the Campbell Memorial High School monument, where Mahoning County Sheriff Randall Wellington will be keynote speaker. There also will be remarks by Judge John P. Almasy, Mayor John Dill and Campbell Schools Superintendent James Ciccolelli. The high school band will perform, and "Taps" will be played by Danny Saulsberry. A special prayer will be for the Rev. Louis Saulsberry Sr., who was active in the American Legion and the community.
CANFIELD -- Ohio State University coach Jim Tressel will speak at 10 a.m. Monday at the township's Memorial Day service on the Green. After the speech will be a march to the cemetery, then to the War Veterans Museum to celebrate Canfield's 80th anniversary. American Legion Post 177 is the sponsor. In case of rain, the event will be in the Canfield High School auditorium.
LOWELLVILLE -- American Legion Post 247 will conduct a service at 9:45 a.m. Monday at Holy Rosary cemetery. There will be remarks by Joseph J. Rossi, Post 247 commander and village mayor. The Mount Carmel band will provide music.
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- A parade will line up at Springfield Local High School at 9 a.m. Monday. At 9:30 a.m. the parade will march down Main Street to St. Paul Church, where Mayor Robert Carson will speak at a service beginning at 10 a.m. Refreshments will follow.
NORTH LIMA -- A parade will assemble at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Good Hope Church and begin to march at 11 a.m. to the Town Memorial. South Range High School band will perform the "The Star Spangled Banner" and First Lt. Brent Davis of the 910th Air Lift Wing will be speaker. The Beaver Township Ruritan Club and township trustees will sponsor the event.
POLAND -- Opening ceremonies will begin at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the American Legion Mahoning Valley Post 15 home, 35 Cortland St. Events include honoring four chaplains killed when the USAT Dorchester sank in 1943 and a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Korean War. At 10 a.m., a parade will start at Lee and College streets and march down Main Street to Riverside Cemetery. Along the route, a service honoring those lost at sea will take place on the Main Street Bridge. Lt. Colonel Rodney Hostler of Youngstown State University's military science department will be the speaker. Paul Hulea, Poland Seminary High School's football coach, is parade marshal.
STRUTHERS -- The Tri-state Detachment Marine Corps League will conduct a service 8 a.m. Monday at the Beirut Memorial, on state Route 616. Commandant Joseph A. Caruso will preside. Participating will be Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Johnston, who lost a son in the Beirut bombing.
YOUNGSTOWN -- United Veterans Council is asking all veterans organizations to assemble at 9:30 a.m. Monday for downtown Youngstown's annual Memorial Day parade, set to begin at 10 a.m. at Walnut Street and East Rayen Avenue. The parade will travel down Wick Avenue to the Vietnam Memorial and the Man on the Monument, then past the Mahoning County Courthouse to West Front Street. The 37th Division Firing Squad will give a short ceremony and "Taps" will be played.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Judge Maureen Cronin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court will speak at 1 p.m. Monday at the VFW Post 6488, 2065 Coitsville-Hubbard Road.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Golden Eagle Club will have its 45th annual Smoky Hollow services at 11:15 a.m. Monday at Walnut Street and Rayen Avenue. Judge Theresa Dellick of Mahoning County Juvenile Court will address the group.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the John J. Buckley Post 1292 home, 609 Steel St.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Lake Park Cemetery. A parade will begin at the cemetery's front entrance and follow the Avenue of Flags to the Veterans section.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Meridian Arms Living Center will have a Memorial Day program at 2 p.m. Wednesday at 650 S. Meridian Road. The event will recognize how veterans living at the center served their country and will honor Charlie Noel, a former Marine who served in the Korean War. Also featured will be a representative from the Youngstown Air Reserve Station. Participants include Robert Pounds of VFW Post 4237 and Chaplain Donald Kurtz. Post 4237 members will play "Taps" and Susanne Mayerchak will provide the music.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Reserve Officers Association, United Veterans Council, will conduct a service at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill cemetery. Sarah Yaple, local Voice of Democracy speech winner, will be the speaker.
TRUMBULL COUNTY
CORTLAND -- A military display will be exhibited at the Cortland-Bazetta Historical Museum at the Viets House, 224 N. High St. Items from local residents include a Civil War pouch, uniforms and a captured World War II flag. The museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
GIRARD -- A parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Boardman Medical Supply parking lot, North State Street. Participants will march to the viaduct for a short service, then to the War Memorial in front of the City Building. Afterward, the parade will regroup and proceed to the City Cemetery where the Girard High School valedictorians will recite the Gettysburg Address. Heidi Davis, salutatorian and Voice of Democracy winner, will be the main speaker. American Legion Post 235, VFW Post 419 and the Army Navy Garrison 422 are sponsors.
McDONALD -- A parade at the high school will precede a Memorial Day tribute, set to begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Woodland Park Memorial. In case of rain, services will be at the Ramsey Memorial Pavilion on the Village grounds.
VIENNA -- Services will begin at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Mathews High School, Warren-Sharon Road. Everyone is invited to join the VFW after the service in a march to the military monument in Vienna Center for the playing of "Taps."
BRISTOL -- Observances begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Sager Memorial Cemetery.
A service also is planned for 10 a.m. at Bristol Pioneer Cemetery behind Bristol Town Park in Bristolville. The procession will march to Evergreen Cemetery, west of the town center, for a 10:15 a.m. service.
There will be a ceremony at 10:40 a.m. in the town park.
COLUMBIANA COUNTY
LISBON -- Activities will begin with the traditional Song Service at 10 p.m. Sunday at the Lisbon Historical Society Train Station, East Washington Street. On Monday, the parade will leave from in front of American Legion Post 275 on West Lincoln Way at 9 a.m. and proceed through the downtown to the cemetery. George Nace will read Logan's Orders, Seth Blosser, winner of the annual contest at David Anderson High School, will recite The Gettysburg Address and the speaker will be Charles McShane, superintendent of Lisbon schools.
LAWRENCE COUNTY
BESSEMER, Pa. -- A service will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the American Legion Post 638 home, West Poland Avenue. Essay winners from Mohawk High School will be recognized. Eugene McConnell will speak and the Rev. and Mrs. Dan Edwards will provide music.
The annual Tour of Services will begin at 8 a.m. Monday at the Post 638 home. A procession to various sites will follow. Other observances will be at 9 a.m. in Enon Valley; 9:30 a.m. in the North Beaver Township building; 10 a.m. in Mount Jackson, 10:15 a.m. in Edinburg; 10:30 a.m. in Hillsville; and 11 a.m. in Bessemer. Pat McCready is bugler.
MERCER COUNTY
WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. -- Area Korean War veterans will hold their annual Laying of the Roses memorial service at the Korean War Veterans Memorial near Oak Tree Country Club in Shenango Township at 1 p.m. Sunday. The monument is on state Route 318 near the Ohio line.
