GIRARD Firearms programs will target safety, liability

Trigger locks will be given away Tuesday and Wednesday.
GIRARD -- Officials here have scheduled two firearms programs that will center on safety, injuries and the liability of owning a gun.
Police Capt. Frank Bigowsky, Atty. James Denney and firefighter Andrew Aurilio, who is also an emergency medical technician, will present the program.
They will speak at 6 p.m. Tuesday at a meeting of the Girard/Liberty Rotary Club in the MetroPlex in Liberty and to Prospect Elementary School PTO at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the school.
Free trigger locks will be distributed. They have 40 in supply, so the giveaway is limited to one per family, Bigowsky and Denney said.
More locks will be made available for those who fill out an application after the supply runs out.
Providers: The locks are being provided by the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, the Law Enforcement Foundation and Gov. Bob Taft.
"The idea is to promote gun safety and make people more aware of guns in their homes," Denney said of the statewide educational program.
Besides the two programs, gun owners are encouraged to take gun safety classes, Denney said.
"This is not a program that says gun locks solve all problems," Bigowsky said, adding the programs provide safety information to children and teen-agers on what to do if they come across a firearm.
