Man shot in ankle
YOUNGSTOWN -- Damon Jefferson, 26, of East Dewey Avenue received treatment at St. Elizabeth Health Center for a bullet wound to his right ankle after a scuffle Wednesday night, police said.
Jefferson told police that the person he'd been arguing with outside his sister's home on McBride Street about 11:45 p.m. left and then returned with a gun and fired five shots. Police have the name of a suspect.
Shooting plan probed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police are investigating reports that a 16-year-old Hartzell Avenue boy who attends Volney Rogers Junior High School has been "recruiting" classmates to come to the school with BB guns to shoot out windows.
The boy also has asked pupils to give him the names of teachers they don't like, according to reports.
Library boards to meet
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County board of trustees building and sites committee will meet at 11 a.m. Friday and the investment committee will meet at 12:30 p.m., both at the Youngstown Club in the Rayen Room.
Construction projects
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Two proposed building projects along Main Street will be considered when the village's Planning and Zoning Commission has a public hearing at 7 p.m. May 30 in council chambers.
Dale James has requested a change in set-back requirements for a building at 10452 Main St.
The second request is from the Dacaro Corp. of Canfield to grant a variance for property on the northwest corner of Calla Road and Main Street. If granted, the variance would allow a drive-through window for the sale of takeout food.
Traffic crackdown
GIRARD -- The police department here will step up traffic enforcement for the Memorial Day weekend. The focus will be U.S. Route 422. The program will run from Friday through Sunday evening.
Incumbent wins race
WARREN -- Bonnie Viele remains Hubbard's 1st Ward councilwoman.
The Trumbull County Board of Elections certified election results Wednesday, confirming that the incumbent defeated Albert J. Patrick 181-178. The election-night count showed Viele winning by one vote.
Board officials say counts for other races changed slightly, but the outcomes were unchanged.
Recorder's return
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Recorder's Office returned this week to renovated offices in the county administration building after 16 months at the Wean building on North Park Avenue.
Some historical records are still being moved, but Recorder Diana Marchese said customers should now come to the administration building offices.
School construction
McDONALD -- The board of education will meet briefly in special session at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to approve a formal construction document to be submitted to the Ohio School Facilities Commission for the construction phase of work at the high school.
Formal state permission is required to proceed with work on general trades, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, window and other construction.
Civil Service help
YOUNGSTOWN -- If the city's Civil Service Commission wants a retired administrator's help, the board is going to have to rehire him, at least part time according to city lawyers.
The civil service board was planning to contract with former director Richard Groucutt, who retired at the end of last year. They wanted him to do some work until a new administrator is hired so testing doesn't fall behind. State law won't allow him to work as an independent contractor for the city, however, city lawyers told the board Wednesday.
The city can rehire him part time. Commissioners said they would explore the effect such an arrangement would have on Groucutt's public retirement benefits before rehiring him.
Council cancels meeting
GIRARD -- City council has canceled its meeting scheduled for Tuesday. Lawmakers will meet next at 7 p.m. June 11.
