Grants for public water
HILLSVILLE, Pa. -- People with low or moderate incomes could be eligible for grants from the state for the coming public water installation project in Mahoning Township.
An informational meeting is planned for 6 tonight at Mahoning Township Community Center on U.S. Route 224. A representative from the United States Department of Agriculture will be there to give out information on grants and loans. Township officials are extending waterlines from the Ohio line to different areas in the township. That project got under way last year when waterlines were installed along portions of Route 224.
Construction projects
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Two proposed building projects along Main Street will be considered when the village's Planning and Zoning Commission has a public hearing at 7 p.m. May 30 in council chambers.
Dale James has requested a change in set-back requirements for a building at 10452 Main St.
The second request is from the Dacaro Corp. of Canfield to grant a variance for property on the northwest corner of Calla Road and Main Street. If granted, the variance would allow a drive-through window for the sale of take-out food.
Violent patient
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said a 29-year-old East Pine Street man being treated at United Community Hospital was arrested after he assaulted hospital personnel and two state troopers.
Police said the man was intoxicated and became violent while being treated around 12:15 a.m. today. Police arrested him and found a marijuana pipe in his possession. He then assaulted two troopers, police said. The man was lodged in Mercer County Jail overnight and faced arraignment today on assault and drug charges.
Traffic crackdown
GIRARD -- The police department here will step up traffic enforcement for the Memorial Day weekend. The focus will be U.S. Route 422. The program will run from Friday through Sunday evening.
Recorder's return
WARREN -- The Trumbull County Recorder's Office returned this week to renovated offices in the county administration building after 16 months at the Wean building on North Park Avenue.
Some historical records are still being moved, but Recorder Diana Marchese said customers should now come to the administration building offices.
School construction
McDONALD -- The board of education will meet briefly in special session at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, to approve a formal construction document to be submitted to the Ohio School Facilities Commission for the construction phase of work at the high school.
Formal state permission is required to proceed with work on general trades, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, window and other construction.
Puppies found drowned
YOUNGSTOWN -- Five puppies -- four of them dead -- were found in a large trash receptacle Wednesday morning on the East Side.
The fifth puppy died after the Mahoning County Dog Warden arrived on the scene.
The puppies had been placed in a black plastic trash bag before being put into a trash bin on Kendis Circle. They were found at around 9:30 a.m. by police investigating a report of a baby in the bin.
Police reports show that the puppies apparently were drowned.
Civil Service help
YOUNGSTOWN -- If the city's Civil Service Commission wants a retired administrator's help, the board is going to have to rehire him, at least part time.
The civil service board was planning to contract with former director Richard Groucutt, who retired at the end of last year. They wanted him to do some work until a new administrator is hired so testing doesn't fall behind. State law won't allow him to work as an independent contractor for the city, however, city lawyers told the board Wednesday.
The city can rehire him part time. Commissioners said they would explore the effect such an arrangement would have on Groucutt's public retirement benefits before rehiring him.
