Police investigate why brothers ran from home
NILES -- Warren police and the county's child protective agency are investigating the circumstances surrounding two young brothers running away from their Warren home.
The boys, ages 11 and 6, were found Monday morning hiding around some shopping carts outside Sam's Club near Eastwood Mall.
The boys told Niles police they were hiding from their father and their mother was inside the store.
Robert Kubiak, director of Trumbull County Children Services, said his investigators will talk with Warren police to determine why the children ran off.
Niles Police Chief Bruce Simeone said the boys have run away before. The brothers would not tell officers how they got from Warren to Niles, he said.
Man to answer charges of vehicular homicide
NILES -- A 44-year-old Youngstown man is to appear in Niles Municipal Court May 29 on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault.
Fred R. Brinsky Jr. remained in critical condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The felony charges against him stem from a crash about 9:30 p.m. Saturday on Salt Springs Road near Interstate 80 that killed Taylor L. Veisz, 19, of Youngstown.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Brinsky's van crossed the center line and collided with Veisz's oncoming car.
Scott Ritchie, 28, of Youngstown, a passenger in Brinsky's vehicle, was in satisfactory condition today at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
Banquet planned forMineral Ridge alumni
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Mineral Ridge High School Alumni Association's annual banquet is June 16 in the high school cafeteria.
Social hour will start at 5:30, with a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Tennis court surfacing
CORTLAND -- The tennis courts in Willow Park will be resurfaced.
Council voted Monday to pay Cortland Excavating and Paving $11,832 for the work, which officials hope will be done within a month.
Last cafe at library
BRISTOL -- The Down in the Garden Cafe at the Bristol Public Library will be open Friday for the last time this year.
Renee Derr will speak at 11 a.m.
Cafe hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The library sponsors the cafe only on Fridays in May.
Housing authority votesto expand its staff
WARREN -- Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority has voted to expand its staff from 74 to 77 people.
The board Monday created these positions: computer systems manager, $41,027 a year; human resource generalist, $30,804 as assistant to the human resources director; and public housing inspector, $28,479 a year for inspecting work and investigating complaints.
The new positions still must be reviewed by the employee's bargaining unit, said Donald Emerson Jr., TMHA executive director.
Provider raises rates
WARREN -- The doctor who held the contract for medical services at the Trumbull County jail has notified county commissioners that she would not continue on a month-to-month basis at the same rate.
Dr. Sharon George's annual contract expired April 30, but she accepted a one-month extension to allow the county to solicit new bids for the service. Hers was the lowest bid, at slightly under $300,000 per year, but it was still 50 percent more than last year's contract, said commissioner Joseph J. Angelo Jr. The contract includes administrative support and nurses.
If another provider is not in place, prisoners will have to be taken to a hospital at a higher cost for the county.
