Scotty Bowman named NHL coach of the year
Detroit Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman has been named The Sporting News' NHL Coach of the Year.
Bowman, 67, in his 29th season as an NHL coach, led the Red Wings to a 49-20-9-4 regular-season record for 111 points and the Central Division title. The 111 points tied the New Jersey Devils for the second-most points in the league behind the Colorado Avalanche, who had 118.
But the Red Wings were upset in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Los Angeles Kings in six games.
Bowman, who edged out Ottawa's Jacques Martin in voting by NHL coaches, holds virtually every NHL coaching record and was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991.

Growing up in Champaign,, Ill., Marquis Johnson already has formed his opinion of Chief Illiniwek. But the Centennial High receiver said he'll read what University of Illinois professor Stephen Kaufman has to say about the mascot. Johnson is one of dozens of coveted prep football and basketball recruits likely to get packages from Kaufman and other like-minded professors, outlining their belief that the Chief fosters hurtful stereotypes of American Indians and racial tension on the Urbana-Champaign campus.
Regardless of their feelings on the issue, Johnson and other recruits said they do not think a school's mascot would affect their college choice.
Riverside-Brookfield, Ill., quarterback Tim Brasic said Chief Illiniwek would be "small potatoes" when he makes his decision. A teammate, defensive lineman Steve Kielp, said he would read the packet but then would "probably throw it in the trash."
Strawberry leaveshospital for center
Darryl Strawberry checked out of a hospital psychiatric ward Monday, and was on his way to a drug treatment center that a judge says will be his home for the next two years.
Hillsborough County Sheriff's records show that Strawberry was released shortly after 4 p.m. to be transferred to Phoenix House, a residential treatment center about 16 miles northeast of Ocala.
On Thursday, Hillsborough County Circuit Court Judge Florence Foster sentenced Strawberry to drug treatment instead of prison. Strawberry had been on house arrest and electronic monitoring at a Tampa drug center when he left for a four-day drug binge March 29.
