Man to answer charges of vehicular homicide
NILES -- A 44-year-old Youngstown man is to appear May 29 in Niles Municipal Court on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault.
Fred R. Brinsky Jr. remained in critical condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The felony charges against him stem from a crash about 9:30 p.m. Saturday on Salt Springs Road near Interstate 80 that killed Taylor L. Veisz, 19, of Youngstown.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Brinsky's van crossed the center line and collided with Veisz's oncoming car.
Scott Ritchie, 28, of Youngstown, a passenger in Brinsky's vehicle, was in satisfactory condition today at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
Mineral Ridge alumniplans annual banquet
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Mineral Ridge High School Alumni Association's annual banquet is June 16 in the high school cafeteria.
Social hour will start at 5:30, with a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Hubbard board to meet
HUBBARD -- The board of education will meet in closed session at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to conduct negotiations and at 1 p.m. Thursday to interview candidates for superintendent.
Robbery, carjacking
BOARDMAN -- Police are investigating a robbery and carjacking that took place just after noon Monday at Home Savings and Loan on Hillman Way.
A Youngstown man told police he was in line at the bank drive-through ready to make a deposit when a man dressed in blue jumped into the passenger side of his car, displayed a knife and told him to drive. Reports say the man left the parking lot and drove north on Hillman Way across Midlothian Boulevard when the man told him to get out of the car "before I stick you."
The man took the car, $1,900 in cash and the victim's wallet.
Company plans meetingabout electric plant
LISBON -- The Charlotte, N.C., company proposing to build a $600 million electric generation plant in Columbiana County will have a public information meeting 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 31 in the David Anderson Junior-Senior High School gymnasium.
Cogentrix Energy Inc. is proposing to build the natural gas-fired plant in Center or Salem townships. Construction could begin late this year, if the company receives approval from state authorities.
Vandals cut down tree
CANFIELD -- A Neff Court homeowner told police vandals cut down a tree in his front yard just before midnight Saturday. The homeowner's daughter recognized the vandals as two teen-age boys from her school. The boys were apprehended a short time later and a bow saw was confiscated as evidence. The tree, a Crimson King maple, had an estimated value of $1,000.

Pay raise for subs
SHARPSVILLE, Pa. -- The Sharpsville Area School Board raised the pay rate for substitute teachers Monday, hoping to make the district more attractive to teachers looking for substitute work.
The district was paying $60 a day this year but will pay $70, said Dr. Derry Stufft, superintendent. Sharpsville has had some difficulty getting substitutes when they are needed and the higher pay scale should help, he said, noting the district uses about four substitutes per week.
