SHARON -- Sharon City School Board is looking for a new boys varsity basketball coach to lead the Tigers.
The board voted 5-4 Monday against renewing the contract held by Gary Revale for next year.
Revale, a social studies teacher in the high school, has been coach for the past five seasons.
Officially, those who voted against giving Revale another year declined comment, saying it was a personnel issue, but it was no secret that some school directors felt the basketball program was faltering and losing potential players who didn't like Revale's style of coaching.
Support: School director Nick Morocco supported Revale, saying he has worked hard on the program.
Morocco said he doesn't think the school board knows why it voted against Revale, who was recommended for re-appointment by the superintendent and high school principal.
Revale had asked for a meeting with the board last month to address any concerns school directors might have, but Dom Russo, vice president of the board, canceled that session, Morocco said.
Requests denied: Russo confirmed canceling the session, saying the board had asked numerous times in the past for a meeting with Revale to address concerns about the program, but was told the board had no authority to act directly with the coach.
Russo wouldn't identify who told him that.
Now, suddenly, Revale was made available for a board interview last month, Russo said, adding that it was too late at that point.
Russo, Pamela Corini, Kathy Hall, Amity Messett and Rick Mancino voted against renewing the contract while Morocco, Donald Golub, Lora Adams-King and Linda Valentino favored the renewal.
