I-80 lane reduction
HUBBARD -- Starting today, traffic on Interstate 80 will be reduced to one 11-foot-wide lane in each direction at various points between U.S. Route 62 and the Pennsylvania state line. Repairing and resurfacing the four lanes of pavement, painting 12 bridges and repaving seven bridges is expected to cost $5 million and take until June 30, 2002, the Ohio Department of Transportation said.
Drug search at schools
AUSTINTOWN -- Schools Superintendent Richard Denamen said five drug-sniffing dogs from local police departments participated in a search of Fitch High School this morning and turned up nothing. The dogs and their handlers searched inside the building and cars in the parking lot, Denamen said. The officers and their dogs were then to proceed to Wilson High School in Youngstown to conduct a similar search, he said.
Woman dies in crash
WEATHERSFIELD -- A Youngstown man remained in critical condition today with injuries from an accident that killed a 19-year-old woman. Fred Brinsky, 44, was in St. Elizabeth Health Center. A spokeswoman at the Southington post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Taylor L. Veisz of Youngstown was killed when Brinsky crossed the center line and his van struck her car on Salt Springs Road near Interstate 80 around 9:43 p.m. Saturday. Scott E. Ritchie, 28, of Youngstown, a passenger in Brinsky's car, was in stable condition this morning in Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
Boy shot in forehead
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ten-year-old Jose Cuevas of East Ravenwood Avenue remained in critical condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot in the forehead Friday evening, possibly by a BB gun, while playing behind his uncle's home on Grandview Avenue on the South Side. Jose and his 11-year-old brother had been playing in the woods about when Jose felt something hit him in the head, according to police reports. Jose's brother told police that they weren't playing with guns and he didn't see where the shot came from.
Assault charge
BESSEMER, Pa. -- A Bessemer man is in jail on charges of assaulting a Poland, Ohio, police officer. Pennsylvania State Police arrested Terry Jay Hayes, 44, of Hayes Lane at 5:20 p.m. Saturday at the West Main Street entrance of BFI in Mahoning Township, Lawrence County. They said the Poland officer tried to stop Hayes on State Line Road for traffic violations, but Hayes kept driving. Hayes eventually pulled over and then assaulted the Poland officer, according to state police. Hayes was arraigned before District Justice Melissa Amodie and placed in jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.
Holiday patrols
LIBERTY -- Liberty Township police are stepping up patrols through Memorial Day week. The added patrols will run from Friday through June 4. "The goal is to increase safety-belt usage to save lives," interim chief Ronald Heineking said. Motorists are urged to wear a safety belt and insist passengers do as well.
Police plan open house
GIRARD -- An open house to display the city's new police headquarters in the justice center will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday. Police spent last week moving into their new quarters. Chief Anthony Ross said the open house will be "family oriented" so families, especially children, can meet individual officers. Snacks and soft drinks will be available, and women will each receive a corsage and children a gift.
