Ursuline tennis players qualify for state



MASSILLON -- Ursuline High's Donald Person has qualified for the Division II state tournament in singles, while teammates Todd Wojtkowski and Brian Meek have earned a doubles berth.
In the district tournament Thursday at Jackson Park courts, Person eliminated Brett Aronson of Ashtabula, 6-3, 6-2 in a first-round match.
He then beat Mark Lundgren of Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas, 6-2, 6-3 and will go against Jake Burns in a semifinal match Saturday. The winner will then play for the championship.
The top four singles players and doubles teams advanced to the state tournament.
Colin Larouere of Poland lost 6-1, 6-1 to Joe Smetona of Cleveland Heights University School in a first-round match.
Doubles play: The Irish's Wojtkowski and Meek defeated David Brazle and Erik Urycki of Tallmadge 6-0, 6-0 in their opening match, then beat Chris Consolo and Drew Esposito of Chagrin Falls, 6-0, 6-2.
Wojtkowski and Meek go against Aaron Gress and Paul Nelson of Bay Village in the semifinals Saturday. The winners advance to the championship.
Nick Radick and Jordan Wagner of Poland defeated Daren Kozlowski and Matt Treblas of Aurora 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
The Bulldogs' duo then lost to Mike Herrick and Jake Dowdell of Elyria Catholic, 6-1, 6-1.
