SMITH -- Ohio Edison Co. has paid the township $2,000 to cover damage to Martin Road caused by company trucks, Smith Township Clerk Mary Winters said.
Trustees had threatened legal action against the company over the damage, which was done late last year during a line-installation project. Trustees signed off on the agreement calling for the $2,000 payment March 26, she said.
Armed Forces Day
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College will have a Mercer County Armed Forces Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday on the college front lawn.
Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Jim Smartz, director of the Mercer County Department of Veterans Affairs, will speak and there will be a U.S. Air Force flyover. There will be a musical salute by retired U.S. Army Sgt. Tim McCall. The program is open to the public and will be followed by a reception on the Howard Miller Student Center terrace.
Ambulance purchase
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Trustees accepted a bid from Penn Care Medical Products in Niles to buy a new ambulance for about $102,000.
Penn Care's bid was the highest of four but the only bid that satisfied all criteria and specifications of the rescue squad, Trustee Reed Metzka said. The bid was accepted at a special meeting earlier this week.
Phone-scam warning
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police are warning people not to give out personal financial information over the telephone. Shenango Township Police said a man claiming he needed a Social Security number, bank account and credit cards numbers called a woman Thursday afternoon. The man said he needed the information to keep it from being put on the Internet, the woman told authorities. The man hung up when she asked his name.
Attack on house
YOUNGSTOWN -- A brick, followed by a two-gallon gas can with an unlighted rag in it, crashed through the living room window of a house in the 2300 block of Overlook Avenue on the West Side around 10 p.m. Thursday, waking the resident. The can landed on its side and gas seeped into the carpet, but police found no signs that the rag had been ignited before being thrown. The homeowner ran to a neighbor to call police after realizing her phone lines had been cut. The woman told police that she has no problems with her neighbors or any enemies.
Fire destroys house
COITSVILLE -- About 15 firefighters from Coitsville, Campbell and Poland battled a blaze that destroyed a two-story, single-family wood house at 4760 McGuffey Road while nobody was home.
The cause of the fire, which started in an upstairs bedroom and was reported around 1 p.m. Thursday, is undetermined, but it appears accidental, said Fire Chief Nick Pope. No damage estimate was available. Campbell firefighters ran a hose some 800 feet from the nearest hydrant to the blaze. Coitsville and Poland have automatic mutual aid for structure fires.
Jailed in assault on boy
SHARON, Pa. -- A Rex Place woman and her boyfriend were in jail today after a dispute involving the woman's 13-year-old son. Police said Geraldine P. Hepfl, 34, and Alvie L. Eicher, 34, were being held on $10,00 bond each, Hepfl charged with disorderly conduct and making terroristic threats and Eicher with simple assault. Police said they were called to the home around 5:30 p.m. Thursday after the boy reported Eicher had pushed him down and struck him. The child suffered superficial injuries, police said. Police said Hepfl began threatening and swearing at her son in the presence of investigating officers, resulting in her arrest. The boy was turned over to the custody of Mercer County Children and Youth Services.
Nurses meeting
BOARDMAN -- The Licensed Practical Nurse Association, Division 3 of Mahoning and Trumbull counties, will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at The Greenbriar, 8064 South Ave. The program will be on nutrition, weight loss and physical fitness, presented by Dr. Mohammad Shayesteh, professor of clinical nutrition at Youngstown State University.
