Wilmington schools keep millage steady

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Wilmington Area School District has introduced a $13.3 million general operating budget for the 2001-2002 school year.
The proposed spending reflects a 2.5 percent increase, or $324,819 more than this year's $13 million budget.
The budget, which was introduced during a special meeting Monday, calls for the tax rate to remain at 84 mills in Lawrence County and 163 mills in Mercer County.
Last year, the district raised taxes by 0.8 mill in Lawrence County and 1 mill in Mercer County.
Details: The proposed budget would:
U Increase the budgetary reserve fund from $80,000 to $100,000.
U Increase the vehicle replacement fund from $20,000 to $25,000.
U Include $9,000 for carpet replacement; $6,000 for ceiling, lighting and door repairs; and $5,000 for athletic stadium work.
U Include $25,000 for textbooks.
U Establish a $50,000 capital projects fund as long as the district's fund balance does not decrease.
U Raise one staff member to full-time status in the special education services department.
U Create a transportation secretary/clerk's position.
