Voters defeat 2 Fairview referendums

FREDONIA, Pa. -- A last-minute push by an anonymous group of Fairview Township residents sent two referendum questions down to defeat in Tuesday's primary.
For American Legion Post 919, it was the fourth loss in its attempt to persuade voters to allow the club to secure a state liquor license.
Spokesman Ed Clark said a group calling itself "Concerned Citizens of Fairview Township" sent out cards to township residents at the last minute, urging them to vote no on the liquor question.
There were no names or signatures on the cards, he said.
The vote was close, just as it was the last three times.
Post members had tried to show that money generated from the liquor license would benefit the community, noting that they help finance various Little League and other community programs.
The post also said it wasn't looking to open a public bar and alcohol would be available only to its members.
"We'll survive," said Clark, contacted at the post after the election. The question can be put on the ballot again in two years, he said.
The township voters also rejected a question about small games of chance that would have allowed nonprofit and charitable groups to secure state licenses to sell raffles and other chance games to raise funds.
