Salem win drops Howland from race



SALEM -- E.J. Boron doubled home Judd Crowgey to tie the game, and then scored the winning run on Jason Paster's fielder's choice, as the Salem High baseball team defeated Howland 3-2 Wednesday in a regular season game.
The loss knocked Howland (11-10, 6-4 in the Metro Athletic Conference) out of the league race for first place.
Winning pitcher Mike Prendergast (5-4) scattered six hits for Salem (12-16, 3-7). Crowgey relieved him in the sixth inning to record his first save. Ted Bellay took the loss for Howland.
Softball: BOARDMAN -- Gina Rango had three hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs to lead Boardman past Ursuline 9-0 in a regular season Steel Valley Conference softball game Wednesday.
Deanna Deardurff added two singles and two RBIs for the Spartans (26-3, 8-0). Jennifer Pancake (9-1) threw a two-hitter at the Irish (4-10, 1-6).
Mary McCabe and Meagan Hovanic also had two hits apiece for the Spartans.
Bristol 5, Southington 4: BRISTOL -- Samantha Mowrer scattered seven hits and struck out one, leading Bristol in an East Suburban League game. The Wildcats (16-4, 13-3) were paced by Haylie Meyers who hit a double.
