Official: Pine needles show salt damage

Official: Pine needlesshow salt damage
Every spring, what appear to be dead pine trees line area roads.
The brown needles of white pines and spruce provide a contrast to the lively green of the returning deciduous leaves.
But have no fear -- these pines will live again.
David Goerig, Mahoning County Extension agent, said they are merely displaying signs of road salt damage from winter.
Goerig said the trees will recover in a few months.
He suggests that for home use, landscapers and homeowners should plant more salt-tolerant trees, such as the Austrian pine, closer to roads to avoid the brown needles.
