Dave Ryan said he feels confident he can win in November.
For the first time in decades, Sharon voters are set to have a bona fide November election for mayor.
Robert T. Price has held the job since 1978 and never had a close re-election bid.
He's not running this year, and for a while Tuesday night, it looked as through Ryan, current city controller and former police chief, might sew up both the Democratic and Republican nominations.
In the end, he did win the Democratic nod, defeating retired city Fire Capt. Bob Lucas by just less than 200 votes, but it was Councilman Rotunno, a Democrat waging a write-in campaign, who netted the Republican nomination.
The count: Unofficial totals reported by the Mercer County Board of Elections showed Rotunno with 159 write-ins, while Ryan, whose backers also launched a Republican write-in bid, had 141 votes on that party's ticket.
A minimum of 100 votes was required to win the nomination.
Rotunno said he was encouraged by his write-in win and the fact that he collected 217 write-in votes on the Democratic ticket as well.
Both Ryan and Rotunno had an additional number of Republican write-in votes under different spellings of their names, and Ryan said he will consider asking Mercer County Common Pleas Court to consolidate all of those spellings into a single vote total if it appears it would give him enough to take the Republican nomination from Rotunno.
