YOUNGSTOWN -- Effective immediately, a deputy dog warden will be available to answer nonemergency calls in the city from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Mahoning County Commissioners said.
The dog warden can be reached during those hours by calling (330) 740-7761. The service covers dogs only, not cats, wildlife or dead animals, county officials said.
Woman hurt during fire
STRUTHERS -- A 27-year-old woman who jumped from the roof of her Maplewood Avenue home to escape a fire is in satisfactory condition in St. Elizabeth Health Center. Struthers firefighters arrived at the home about 4:36 a.m. today and had the blaze under control in about 30 minutes.
Struthers firefighter Kenneth Sabol said the homeowner, Richard Benedict, woke up in the middle of the night and discovered the fire. Sabol and two other occupants escaped, but his daughter Sherry, who was on the second floor, was trapped.
The blaze, which gutted the first floor and half of the second floor, is still under investigation. No loss estimate was available.
Youth faces drug charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 13-year-old Struthers boy at Adams Alternative School on Cooper Street was found with a small bag of marijuana in his pants pocket, reports show. When searched Tuesday by a Mahoning County deputy sheriff, the boy said he brought the marijuana to school on the city's South Side to "show off." The boy was arrested on a drug possession charge, then released to his uncle, a deputy.
Escape charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Mahoning County misdemeanant jail inmate who failed to return from a work-release program has been charged with escape. An excavating company in Petersburg that employs Gregory H. Young, 41, of Crandall Avenue, told the sheriff's department Tuesday that he failed to show up at work. Young had permission to leave the jail at 7:30 a.m. and was expected to return by 5:30 p.m. Young was serving time on a conviction of receiving stolen property, jail records show. Local police have been advised to be on the lookout for Young.
AIDS consortium
CANFIELD -- The Ryan White Consortium, a regional planning group funded by the Ryan White C.A.R.E. Act and overseen by the Ohio Department of Health, meets the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Ursuline Center, 4250 Shields Road, Canfield. The consortium, which is responsible for the coordination of HIV outpatient health care and support services for Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Jefferson counties, also works with the regional HIV prevention planning group in a coalition known as Valley HIV Coalition. Vets at Forest Lawn
BOARDMAN -- Families and friends of veterans buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery on Market Street should pick up flag holders and markers to be put on graves before Saturday, when members of veterans organizations will place flags on graves.
Beaver Twp. patrols
NORTH LIMA -- Starting May 25 and continuing through June 4, more Beaver Township Police officers will be patrolling area roads and highways for violators of Ohio's child passenger and safety belt laws.
"The goal of our heightened enforcement efforts is to increase safety belt usage and to save lives," said Chief Carl N. Frost.
Environmental grant
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley Northeast Ohio Camp Fire Council received a $11,690 grant from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to develop an interactive summer education program to help 45 inner-city pupils between the ages of 5 and 10 to improve their science grades. The program will emphasize the human and environmental interrelationship and will explore topics including geology and topology, grasslands, wetlands, deserts, skulls and skeletons, energy, reptiles, habitats and careers. The funds come from the Ohio Environmental Education Fund.
