MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Vietnam Era Veterans Association Inc. will hold its sixth annual Remembrance and Reflections Ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the west side of the county courthouse at 2 p.m. Sunday. The program honors the men from Mercer County who were killed in the Vietnam War. Their names will be read and a rose placed at the memorial in their honor. The public is invited.
Beagles for adoption
BOARDMAN -- Animal Appeal of Sharpsville will have a display of beagle and beagle-mix dogs available for adoption from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Petsmart store on Doral Drive in Boardman. Stained glass stolen
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said someone stole a number of stained-glass windows from a vacant house for sale in the 100 block of Stambaugh Avenue on Sunday or early Monday. The theft was reported by neighbors who noticed the windows missing, police said.
BFI agreement
POLAND -- Township trustees accepted an amended contract proposal Monday regarding the Browning-Ferris Industries Carbon Limestone Landfill here. The new agreement would allow BFI to bring more long-haul waste to the site.
The company has offered the township thousands of dollars in incentives for accepting the proposal. BFI representative Mike Heher said county bodies that must approve the agreement, such as the solid waste district, commissioners and board of health, will meet in separate meetings this week to decide on the amendment.
Diversity conference
LIBERTY -- Trumbull and Mahoning County Department of Job and Family Services will play host to the statewide Cultural Diversity Conference May 24-25 at Holiday Inn MetroPlex. The theme of this year's conference is "Changing the Norm by Celebrating Our Differences." Experts from around the country will participate in the conference. The workshops are geared to help participants develop skills and strategies needed to respond to the diversity of families in Ohio.
Altiere campaign case
WARREN -- Columbus attorney George McCue will represent the Trumbull County Board of Elections at a May 31 hearing before the Ohio Elections Commission regarding Sheriff Thomas Altiere's campaign finances since 1993.
The board voted Monday to hire McCue, of the firm Crabbe, Brown and James, for $125 per hour after the county prosecutor declined to represent the board, citing a conflict of interest. The county prosecutor's office is the official legal counsel for all county offices and this case pits one against another.
McCue also is representing the board against the sheriff in a related case pending in 5th District Court of Appeals.
League to meet
WARREN -- The League of Women Voters of Trumbull County has its annual meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Warren Women's Club. The cost for brunch is $10. The league will elect officers and approve a budget. For reservations, call Velia Baba at (330) 638-1876.
Sentence reduced
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- An Erie County man who sexually assaulted a boy over 21/2 years, beginning when the boy was 8 years old, had his sentence reduced because of a change to a state sex offender law. John Mushat, 43, ohad his sentence reduced Monday from a maximum of life in prison to 20 years in prison.
Erie County Judge Stephanie Domitrovich sentenced Mushat to the harsher term in January after ruling Mushat was a sexually violent predator under Megan's Law.
But the state Supreme Court struck down the law, claiming it was unconstitutional because defendants were required to prove they weren't sexual predators. When the Pennsylvania Legislature amended the law, it also took away life in prison as a punishment. Mushat pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and one count of corruption of the morals of a minor.
Bingo robbery
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A gunman robbed the Moose Club bingo of about $1,800. Police said the man ran off with the cash and they later followed a trail of coins from the Mercer Street club to East Washington Street, but didn't find the robber. He is described as a white man, about 6 feet tall with a thin build. He wore a blue handkerchief over the lower half of his face, police said. The robbery occurred at 8:47 a.m. May 4 and police just released the report today.
