About 40 teams of area residents walked the track at Niles McKinley High School stadium over the weekend, raising about $75,000 for the American Cancer Society.
The teams of 10 to 15 people participated in the society's Relay for Life, and the event opened with 1,755 cancer survivors walking the first lap. The amount raised exceeded the $50,000 goal and surpassed the event last year, which garnered $45,000.
The Relay for Life at Austintown Fitch High School over the weekend raised $65,000. That's up from $55,000 last year. About 50 teams of 10 to 15 people participated, and 225 cancer survivors walked the opening lap.
Relay for Life events will be conducted this weekend at Kent State University Trumbull Campus in Champion, at Firestone Park in Columbiana County and at Boardman Center Middle School.
New fair categories
CANFIELD -- "Let's Have A Garden Party!" is an invitation being made by the Fine Arts Department of the 2001 Canfield Fair. In addition to fine arts, photography, and painting on porcelain for adults, students and professionals, two new categories have been added to this year's fair.
In the Mystery Bag Contest, fairgoers will create a work of art from a bag of provided art supplies. The Amateur Shutterbug Contest will give contestants a camera and two hours to take pictures on the fairgrounds.
