PREP DIAMONDS Poland stays true to form by winning MAC title

The Struthers baseball team moved into a title tie.
SALEM -- The Poland High softball team has won or shared a league championship for 16 consecutive seasons.
On Monday, the Bulldogs defeated Salem 14-1 to wrap up the Metro Athletic Conference title.
Sue Olesko homered in the first inning to give the Bulldogs (19-7, 8-2) a 3-0 lead.
Michelle Nespeca had three singles, while Katie Naumoff, Emily Patton, Olesko, Stephanie Russell and Jio Toppi each had two hits for the Bulldogs.
Jessie Lamport (4-3) earned the win with relief help from Sarah Knill. They combined on a two-hitter.
Salem is 0-19, 0-10.
South Range 7, Mineral Ridge 4: NORTH LIMA -- Jenn Toth went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored for the Raiders (13-11, 7-6 Inter-County League).
Niki Knopp had two hits, with a double and triple, while Amy Algeo had a single and a double for the winners.
Jen Ridgeway had a single and double, while Ashley Basista tripled for the Raiders, who had 11 hits.
Toth threw a two-hitter to go to 12-10.
The Rams are 12-1 in the ICL.
Southington 5, Ledgemont 0: SOUTHINGTON -- Katie Fiest and Haylie Meyers each had two hits for the Wildcats (16-3, 13-2 East Suburban Conference).
Lindsay Byer (9-2) allowed just one hit.
Feist drove in two runs.
Baseball: STRUTHERS -- Struthers gained a tie with Poland for the Metro Athletic Conference title by defeating Howland 6-4.
Bob Benson and Eric Barone each had three hits and two RBIs in the Wildcats' 13-hit attack. Jared Bogan, who pitched the complete-game victory, added two hits.
For Howland, Ted Bellay, Ron Hooper and Kyle Moore each had two hits.
Struthers (15-5 overall) and Poland tied for the title with 7-3 records; Howland can join them with a victory in its final regular season game.
Newton Falls 5, Liberty 3: NEWTON FALLS -- Eric Lance had two singles and Dave Montgomery homered as Newton Falls defeated Liberty in a Trumbull Athletic Conference regular season game.
The Tigers are 8-14, 5-9.
Rob Kay had three singles for the Leopards.
Hubbard 5, Brookfield 0: HUBBARD -- Kevin Libeg (5-2) threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout, his second of the season.
Libeg struck out nine and walked just one.
Hubbard is 12-9, 11-4 TAC.
Dean Marshall went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while Mike Antenucci added a pair of singles. James Yohman drove in two runs.
Brookfield's Adam Daugherty doubled.
