KO DRUGS BOXING Poland, Campbell fare well

LIBERTY -- The third night of the K.O. Drugs high school boxing tournament will be held Wednesday night at the old Liberty High Gymnasium, with the first bout scheduled for 7 p.m.
There will be 27 underclass and 23 upperclass bouts, with a dozen fighters from Poland leading the way.
The Bulldogs are the only school with double-figure representation for the quarterfinals, with Campbell Memorial and Keystone having six participants each. The Campbell boxers are undefeated, as are four Woodrow Wilson fighters from the tournament's first week.
Marquee matchups: There will be two outstanding upperclass light heavyweight bouts with all fighters in them undefeated. Poland's Greg Simcox takes on Campbell's Tony Skillas in one bout and in the other one, a Steel Valley Conference contest, Warren Harding's Fuquan Carroll battles Rob Smaltz from Ursuline.
Smaltz, an underclass champion from last year and a member of the state championship football team, is the only representative from Ursuline. Though there are no heavyweights in upperclass action Wednesday, there are plenty of boxers from the weight classes under the big boys with five middleweight, three super middleweight and four light heavyweight bouts scheduled.
The underclass division of ninth and 10th graders will have three heavyweight bouts, with one of these including Warren Harding athlete Prescott Burgess. The Raiders sophomore will fight Ryan Lindsey from Greenville. The underclass also will have the only welterweight bouts of the night with a good fight among four in that weight class having Nick Graham from Canfield battling Cardinal Mooney's Frank Cassese.
Those who survive this week of quarterfinal action in this round-robin tournament will advance to the semifinals May 23. Tickets will be on sale at the door Wednesday night at $5 for students and $10 for adults.
