Accident claimsman's life, injures 2
CANFIELD -- Two Lake Milton men remain in St. Elizabeth Health Center today with injuries suffered in a car accident on U.S. Route 224 that killed another Lake Milton man.
John P. Cunningham, 30, was listed in critical condition, and Michael Slepski, 31, was in stable condition this morning.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Cunningham was driving a minivan west on Route 224 near Crory Road around 9:10 a.m. Saturday when the minivan went off the right side of the road, struck a mailbox, veered back onto the road and over the centerline, where it hit a tractor-trailer carrying a manufactured home.
Slepski and Joaquin C. Holstein, 28, who was pronounced dead at the scene, were passengers in the minivan.
The tractor-trailer was driven by Steven Fuller, 45, of Waterloo, Ind., who was treated for minor injuries.
Democrats to meet
POLAND -- Democrats of the 17th District will meet at 7:30 p.m. today at Poland Community Baseball Association hall on Sheridan Road. The guest speaker is Bertram deSouza, Vindicator editorial writer and columnist. The public is invited.
Vietnam War memorial
MERCER, Pa. -- The Mercer County Vietnam Era Veterans Association Inc. will hold its sixth annual Remembrance and Reflections Ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the west side of the county courthouse at 2 p.m. Sunday. The program honors the men from Mercer County who were killed in the Vietnam War. Their names will be read and a rose placed at the memorial in their honor. The public is invited.
Beagles for adoption

BFI agreement
POLAND -- Township trustees accepted an amended contract proposal Monday regarding the Browning-Ferris Industries Carbon Limestone Landfill here. The new agreement would allow BFI to bring more long-haul waste to the site.
The company has offered the township thousands of dollars in incentives for accepting the proposal. BFI representative Mike Heher said county bodies that must approve the agreement, such as the solid waste district, commissioners and board of health, will meet in separate meetings this week to decide on the amendment.
Diversity conference
LIBERTY -- Trumbull and Mahoning County Department of Job and Family Services will play host to the statewide Cultural Diversity Conference May 24-25 at Holiday Inn MetroPlex. The theme of this year's conference is "Changing the Norm by Celebrating Our Differences." Experts from around the country will participate in the conference. The workshops are geared to help participants develop skills and strategies needed to respond to the diversity of families in Ohio.

Car hits deer
NEW BRIGHTON, Pa. -- A 56-year-old Niles man had a run-in with a deer near here this morning.
Pennsylvania State Police in Beaver County said Noah Johnson of 238 Mahoning Ave. was southbound on state Route 60 about 6:20 a.m. when the deer ran in front of his Chevy Beretta near Exit 14 and was hit.
No other information was available.
NASA and technology
HOWLAND -- Former NASA computer specialist William H. Crell Jr. will discuss technology spinoffs from the space program in a free presentation at the Howland Branch of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library at 6:30 p.m. May 23.
Stained glass stolen
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said someone stole a number of stained-glass windows from a vacant house for sale in the 100 block of Stambaugh Avenue on Sunday or early Monday. The theft was reported by neighbors who noticed the windows missing, police said.
