NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Two people were flown to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment after their car crashed into a tree.
Casey Sandusky, 18, of David Lane, Slippery Rock, was traveling south on state Route 19 in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, lost control of his car and crashed into a tree at 1:18 p.m. Saturday, state police said. Slippery Rock Township volunteer firefighters had to extricate Sandusky and Melinda Nuttall, 15, no address available, from the 1987 Ford Escort.
Both were flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Pittsburgh, where they were treated in the emergency room and released.
J.J. Cafaro scheduledto plead guilty in court
CLEVELAND -- John J. Cafaro, executive vice president of the Cafaro Co., was scheduled to plead guilty today in U.S. District Court to complicity to violate the federal bribery statute.
Cafaro, 49, of Liberty, admits that he gave U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. of Poland, D-17th, cash and services in return for the congressman's promotion of Cafaro's laser-guidance technology with the Federal Aviation Administration. Cafaro's criminal information was filed May 4, the same day a federal grand jury handed up a 10-count indictment against Traficant.
Water forums planned
EDINBORO, Pa. -- Four state agencies are asking residents to help shape the future of Pennsylvania's water resources.
They have scheduled a series of 15 public forums across the state and the first will be at 6 p.m. May 23 at the Ramada Inn here to discuss current and future water resource needs. "The information gathered at these forums will help set policies to protect water as a resource and an economic asset," said David E. Hess, acting secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection. The Departments of Community and Economic Development, Conservation and Natural Resources and Agriculture are also participating in the program.
The forums will outline basic water resource challenges and opportunities, both locally and statewide, as well as raise public awareness of water resources.
Free firewood offered by Mill Creek MetroParks
BOARDMAN -- Mill Creek MetroParks will offer free firewood at its wood storage lot on West Golf Drive from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Individuals must cut and load the wood and only 15 vehicles will be allowed at one time.
Trucks larger than pickup size or those carrying trailers are prohibited. Cars may pull trailers smaller than 8 feet.
Mexican event set

Boat racing's a goat Presque Isle
ERIE, Pa. (AP) -- Officials at Presque Isle State Park have given the green light to vintage motorboat racing near the park for the first time in five decades.
Park officials worked out a deal allowing the Three Rivers Outboard Racing Association to have a series of races in a portion of the bay this summer, said Harry Leslie, park operations manager.
The U.S. Coast Guard and the state Fish and Boat Commission still need to approve the races, Leslie said.
Members of the association, who race 8-foot antique boats powered by small outboard motors, asked park officials earlier this year to consider holding their races last held at Presque Isle in the 1950s.
The advisory committee approved the races in March, but only if they wouldn't disrupt purple martins, which are birds that roost in the area. The committee also banned open pipe boats, or those with exhaust above water which are typically noisy.
The races were tentatively scheduled for Aug. 18 and 19.
