YSU men hold fourth, women fifth

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Western Illinois men and Southern Utah women extended their lead after the second day of competition in the Mid-Continent Conference track and field meet Friday at Youngstown State.
The Penguin men were in fourth place with 45 points. Western Illinois leads the three-day meet with 101 points.
Southern Utah's women were on top of the standings with 102 points, and YSU was fifth with 47.
Kurt Michaelis of the Penguins placed third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9 minutes, 35.8 seconds. YSU's Tim Tatarka was fourth in 9:42.3 and teammate Jeri Hull was fifth in 9:42.4. Zak James of Southern Utah won the race in 9:12.2.
Hecker second: The Penguins' Josh Hecker placed second in the discus (161 feet) and was fifth in the shot put (43-9 1/4).
YSU's Beth Hochstetler took fourth place with a throw of 143-11. Anna Bullock of Southern Utah won with a throw of 160-8.
Andrea Snyder of YSU finished fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase in 11:43.6. Mary Schauerhammer of Southern Utah won the event in 10:47.3.
The Penguins' Delores Gaines was fifth in the shot put (40-8 3/4).
Some of the feature races scheduled to start today at 9 a.m. include the men's 100 and 200 dashes and the men's 110 and women's 100 hurdle races.
