Memorial lectureto feature speakers
BOARDMAN -- The seventh annual Rabbi Samuel Meyer Memorial Lecture will present three speakers in an ecumenical program, "Three Perspectives on Noah: Rescuing the Power and Delight of the Biblical Story," at 7:30 p.m. May 30 in St. Luke Catholic Church.
The speakers are Molly Halter, a storyteller and a Christian educator at Poland Presbyterian Church; Rabbi Roger Klein, associate rabbi at Temple-Tifereth Israel in Beachwood, Ohio, and an assistant clinical professor of family medicine at Case Western Reserve University medical school; and the Rev. George Smiga, a faculty member at St. Mary Seminary and Graduate School in Wickliffe, and pastor of St. Noel Catholic Church in Willoughby Hills.
The "Give the Children a Chance Choir" from Youngstown will perform.
The lecture honors the late rabbi who was spiritual leader of Temple El Emeth and who worked to foster cooperation and understanding between Jews and Christians.

Group elects officers,including 2 from area
AUSTINTOWN -- Monsignor George Appleyard of St. Anne's Church in Austintown and a priest of the Ukrainian Catholic Diocese in Parma, Ohio, was recently elected secretary of the National Association of Diocesan Ecumenical Officers during a meeting in San Diego. The organization represents Latin and Eastern Catholic dioceses in the United States.
The Rev. Joseph Witmer, a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown and pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Aurora, Ohio, was re-elected vice president. Officers serve three-year terms.
The election means two area priests, and for the first time, an Eastern Catholic officer, are helping to shape Catholic ecumenical efforts through the association.
Annual luncheon set
VILLA MARIA, Pa. -- The Villa Maria Retreat Center, a ministry of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, will have its fifth annual Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Lunch and Lecture on May 25.
The speaker will be author and theologian Dr. John Shea, the senior scholar in residence at Park Ridge Center for the study of Health, Faith and Ethics and a research scholar at the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University in Chicago. He will speak on "The Spiritual Interests of American Culture and the Spiritual Traditions of Catholicism: Searching for Common Ground."

Unity minister named
GIRARD -- The Rev. Richard A. Schumacher has been named the minister at Unity Church Centre. He often shares his poetry and prose from the pulpit. He previously served at a Unity ministry in Akron. A reception for the Rev. Mr. Schumacher will follow the 10:30 a.m. service May 20.
Crusade at Stambaugh
YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Iona E. Locke of Detroit will bring the "Let's Get it On! The Word and Music Crusade!" to Stambaugh Auditorium at 7 p.m. May 25. The Abyssinia Crusade Choir, also from Detroit, will perform. Admission is free. Call (330) 747-1509.

Annual meeting set
BOARDMAN -- Women of the Youngstown Deanery will be hosts of the 124th annual meeting of the Episcopal Church Women, Diocese of Ohio, Monday through Wednesday at the Holiday Inn. The keynote speaker will be retired Bishop John Thornton of the Diocese of Idaho, who, with his wife, Jan, began a school at the request of Indian elders that is supported by the Women of the Ohio diocese.
Performance, revival
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two events are scheduled at Rising Star Baptist Church.
The local gospel quartet, the Nevels Sisters, will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday.
The church will also have its spring revival at 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesdaywith the Rev. Paul Brewer Sr. of Columbus. He's a field strategist for the State Convention of Baptists in Columbus.
Strategist to speak

Congregations signed
CANFIELD -- The National Organization on Disability in Washington, D.C., has announced it has met its goal of signing 2,000 congregations to commit to including people with disabilities in their congregations.
One congregation is St. Michael Parish, which has Mass at 11 a.m. the first and third Sundays of each month with a sign interpreter for the deaf. The pastor, the Rev. Terry Hazel, is chaplain for the Youngstown Diocesan Deaf Association. The parish holds YDDA social events and has offered classes in sign language. The parish has also made room in several rows for people who are physically challenged, designated special parking and installed an automatic door and specially equipped restrooms.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Dr. Darrell L. Grace, a doctor of internal medicine, will be the speaker at 11 a.m. Sunday at Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church.
Pastoral appreciation
YOUNGSTOWN -- Union Baptist Church will celebrate its sixth annual pastoral appreciation day for Pastor Michael H. Harrison Sr. at 6 p.m. next Saturday.
On May 20, the speaker at 10:45 a.m. will be Pastor Michael Rutledge from Mount Carmel Community Church in Steubenville. The speaker at 4 p.m. will be Pastor Kenneth Paramore from United Baptist Church in Akron.

Couples to be honored
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Office of Marriage and Family Ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown is sponsoring its wedding anniversary celebration for couples who have been married 25, 40, 50, or more years.
