Kent State: Pitcher Gus Hlebovy, a graduate of Campbell Memorial High, got off to a strong freshman start with the baseball team. Hlebovy recently won his first two starts against Cleveland State and Marshall, boosting his record to 3-1 and was rewarded by being moved into the starting rotation. He yielded a combined 10 hits for both games with nine strikeouts (seven against Cleveland State) and three walks. For the season, Hlebovy pitched 30 1/3 innings with a 5.04 ERA, 21 strikeouts and 11 walks, and gave up 18 runs, 17 of them earned. Hlebovy helped KSU to second place in the MAC East with a 12-7 record behind Bowling Green (15-4). The Flashes are 20-22 overall.
Also with KSU are Scott Diehl, a junior pitcher from Howland High; and Matt Sega, a freshman infielder from Canfield High. Diehl has a 1-2 record and 5.79 ERA in 23 1/3 innings, with 11 strikeouts and three walks. He gave up 25 runs, 15 of them earned. Sega played in nine games, starting two of them, and was 3-for-15 at the plate (.200).
Bowling Green: D.J. Durkin of Boardman has advanced from player to coach with the football program. A four-year letter-winner and two year captain for the Falcons, Durkin is in his first year as a defensive graduate assistant coach. The Boardman High graduate recently coached during Bowling Green's spring football drills. While a player, Durkin started 33 games at defensive end and compiled 131 tackles, including 28 for losses. He was No. 1 in sacks on the 1998 team, while ranking second in that in 2000. At Boardman, Durkin played three seasons and made All-Northeast Ohio and All-Steel Valley Conference. He was expected to complete his bachelor's degree in marketing.
Also with the Bowling Green team are Mike Bodnar, a fifth-year senior offensive tackle from Boardman High; and Kevin Poindexter, a redshirt freshman wide receiver from Ursuline High. Both rank No. 2 on the depth chart.
The Falcons' opener is Sept. 1 at Missouri.
Ohio Northern: Bill Narducci, a senior outfielder for the baseball team from Campbell and Ursuline High, has been selected to the Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball First Team. Narducci carries a 3.63 grade-point average as a major in civil engineering.
All-OAC softball: Four area women were named to the all-conference softball team, including three from Muskingum College. Tami Anglin and Erin Zupko, both from Muskingum, were named to the first team along with Amanda Roble from Baldwin-Wallace.
Anglin is a junior catcher from Springfield High, while Zupko is a freshman outfielder from Liberty High. Roble is a sophomore outfielder from Columbiana High.
Angie Burnside, also of Muskingum, made the second team. She is a sophomore pitcher from Canfield High.
Academic All-OAC track-CC: Dan Forbes, a senior on the Muskingum College track team from Southern Local, has made the Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Track & amp; Field/Cross Country Team for the third straight year. Forbes, who also ran cross country, carries a 3.69 grade-point average as a health and physical education major. He was selected to the first team, after making honorable mention the past two years.
Three other Youngstown area performers -- David Benson of Mount Union and Nick Styn and Rich Wilson, both from Baldwin-Wallace, were selected as honorable mentions. Benson, who ran both sports, is from Poland High and carries a 3.86 GPA in chemistry. Styn, who competed only in track and field as did Wilson, is from Hubbard High and has a 3.84 GPA in biology. Wilson is from Lordstown High and has a 3.41 GPA in computer information systems and business.
Baldwin-Wallace: Bryan Bartunek, a junior tennis player from Warren Harding High, has been involved in 82 wins during his career through last week's play. Bartunek has a 37-3 singles record, and teamed with Ryan Burdick (Conneaut) for a 45-11 doubles mark for three seasons.
Mount Union: Katie Schnurrenberger, a junior on the women's tennis team from Austintown Fitch, gained runner-up honors at the Heidelberg College Classic.
In track, senior Nate Heddleston from Beaver Local placed third in the 100 hurdles in 15.01 seconds at the B-W Invitational. In the women's meet, Natalie Anderson of East Liverpool placed third in the 100-meter dash in 12.79 seconds.
Hiram: Bruce Alexander, hurdler for the track team from Girard High, placed eighth in the 200 meters (22.83) and long jump (20-5).
In baseball, Brian Frasco, a senior pitcher-third baseman from Ursuline High, broke the school record for career home runs with 18. He set the mark with a two-run blast against Wooster on May 1, surpassing the previous Hiram standard of 17 held by Joe Lisko from Columbiana.
Thiel: Caleb Goist, a freshman pitcher, third baseman and shortstop with the baseball team from Columbiana High, started 31 games this season and batted .304 with 20 RBIs and one homer. On the mound, Goist had a 0-5 record in eight appearances with a 5.20 ERA. Thiel posted a 10-25 record, including 3-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Westminster: Brad Yeager, standout quarterback for the Niles High football team under coach Bill Bohren, will play with Westminster. Yeager completed 60 percent of his passes for 750 yards and eight touchdowns last season, to lead Niles into its first regional championship game. As a junior, he led the Red Dragons to its first playoff spot. Yeager was a two-time All-Trumbull County pick, and also made All-Northeast Ohio and All-Metro Athletic Conference as a senior. The son of Ginnie and Duane Yeager, Brad has a 3.4 grade-point average and intends to major in business at Westminster.
