WARREN Two fire stations to reopen

Five firefighters will be back on the job at the beginning of the week.
WARREN -- Two fire stations are about to reopen more than a year after being closed by budget cuts.
Fire Chief Jay Mulligan said he will open the stations on Atlantic Street N.E. and Parkman Road sometime Monday morning.
He thanked citizens for passing a 0.5-percent income tax increase, generating more income for safety forces and allowing the reopening.
Nearly 58 percent of voters approved the tax which will bring in about $4.8 million a year for police and fire operations.
Monies were not designated for safety services in March, August and November 2000, when similar issues failed at the polls.
Lack of funding: Police officers, firefighters and other employees were laid off in January 2000 when the city closed parks and made other cuts to head off a budget shortfall.
The fire department has 64 firefighters. The central station on Youngstown Road was the only one open.
Mulligan has said staffing will eventually be 75 firefighters, though he would like to have 87 to man the three stations, fight fires and provide paramedic services.
Firefighters recalled: Lt. Jeff Younkins, president of Warren Firefighters Local 204, said this morning each of the two station will have three firefighters per shift -- the same as in 1999.
Recall letters went out this week and furloughed employees will have two weeks to let the city know if they intend to return.
Five firefighters have confirmed they'll be back at the beginning of the week and a civil service test will determine new hires, Younkins said.
