CHAMPION -- The Champion High softball team is riding the crest of a 10-game winning streak.
Molly Barnes held Liberty to five hits as the top-seeded Golden Flashes beat the Leopards 3-2 Thursday in the Division III sectional softball tournament.
Champion (19-2) will play the Ashtabula Harbor-Burton Berkshire winner in the Orwell district Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Beth Rowland had a single and a double for the Flashes, who led 3-0 after three innings before holding off the Leopards, who scored in the sixth and seventh frames.
Barnes (9-1) also doubled for Champion.
LaBrae 6, Girard 2: GIRARD -- LaBrae escaped two early jams and went on to defeat Girard and capture a Div. III sectional championship.
The Vikings advanced to face Garrettsville Garfield in a district semifinal Wednesday at the Green Beaver Complex near North Lima.
Girard loaded the bases in the first and second innings, but LaBrae (11-5) escaped unscathed. When the Indians scored twice in the third inning, the Vikings responded with five runs in the bottom half to take command, 5-2.
Andrea Gibson's fifth-inning RBI triple accounted for the final run.
Amber Dietelbach and Julie Hartman had two hits each for LaBrae, with Dietelbach doubling.
LaBrae's Kendra Needles struck out seven and walked two in pitching the complete-game victory. Jen Melfi took the loss for Girard.
Garfield 3, Newton Falls 1: NEWTON FALLS -- Outhit 13-5, Garfield scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to eliminate Newton Falls.
Newton Falls (16-7), which was seeded No. 2, stranded 12 batters.
The Tigers had the bases loaded in the second inning, then left two runners on base in the third and fifth innings.
Garfield (11-6) got its three runs as Brandi Carmen and Tia Knipper hit back-to-back singles and Jessica Rockwood tripled them home and she scored on a throwing error.
Newton Falls' Lori DeSalvo hit a double and three singles.
Jackson-Milton 2, Columbiana 0: NORTH JACKSON -- It took 11 innings for Jackson-Milton to beat Columbiana for a Div. IV sectional title.
The Bluejays (12-10) got their two runs as Niki James doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Asia Koloci.
Courtney Reppy's bunt single moved Kolici to third and when the Columbiana catcher threw the ball into the outfield, Kolici scored. Reppy advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Jessica Wilmoth.
Corey Velk went the distance, scattered five hits and struck out eight to pick up the win.
Abbey DeZee, Theresa Yeager and Wilmoth each had two singles for the Bluejays.
In a losing cause, Stevie Goist of Columbiana (13-9) scattered nine hits and struck out eight.
