Struthers council chief resigns; others in body stay

STRUTHERS -- On the night city council accepted the resignation letter of its president, Michael Orenic, two councilmen said they would finish serving their terms.
Robert Carcelli, D-at large, said he will focus on the development of LTV Steel property and battle energy deregulation until his term ends Dec. 31, 2001.
And Mark Sandine, D-2nd, said he was elected to serve two terms and feels obligated to fulfill the order.
Councilman Terry Stocker, D-4th and president pro tempore, served in Orenic's place at Wednesday's regular meeting, during which Orenic's letter was read.
In the letter: Orenic, who was defeated by 78 votes in Tuesday's primary by Councilman Danny Thomas Jr., D-1st, wrote: "Struthers remains a good place to live, and I want to thank the people who voted for me for their confidence and 20 years of support. However, I will respect the wishes of the community."
Both Stocker and Councilman Daniel Yemma, D-at large, thanked Orenic, who did not attend, for his work.
Stokers' switch to president for the remainder of 2001 means a 4th Ward Democratic precinct committeeman will fill his spot for the remainder of the year.
Officials will begin looking for that replacement this week.
