Man pleads guilty in robberies, chase

YOUNGSTOWN -- Steve Mango, 30, of Canton, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to charges resulting from a pair of business robberies and a high-speed police chase in February.
A county grand jury indicted Mango in March on charges of involuntary manslaughter, robbery, failure to comply with a police order and two counts of theft. He pleaded to the same charges.
Judge Maureen A. Cronin delayed sentencing until after a background check. Assistant Prosecutor Kelly Johns said she will recommend a sentence of eight years, to be served in addition to time Mango will have to serve for violating parole in Stark County.
Mango said in court that his Stark County sentence will be 10 years. He is charged in connection with thefts from a Perkins restaurant and Dairy Mart convenience store in Boardman.
When Boardman police attempted to stop him near Southern Boulevard and Indianola Road, he fled north on Southern, then east on Midlothian Boulevard with officers in pursuit.
Against a red light, Mango turned north onto Youngstown-Poland Road and collided with three other vehicles. Phillip E. Swantner, 34, of Struthers, was in one of those cars and died about three weeks later of injuries from the crash.
