TRUMBULL COUNTY Pupils win awards for recycling posters

WARREN -- McDonald sixth-grader Kelli Datchuk's drawing of people picking up cans under a watchful bunny's gaze can now be seen from just about anywhere.
The work, admonishing "Don't litter; make the world a better place," has been named a first-place winner of the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District's Earth Day Web site contest.
It, along with pictures by runners-up and Geauga County winners, already have been posted on the district's site, www.startrecycling.com.
Today, Trumbull County commissioners were to present plaques and gift certificates to Kelli and two county runners-up: Lauren Brown, who like Kelli is a sixth-grader at McDonald's Roosevelt Elementary School, and Nathan Sweitzer, a fourth-grader at Maplewood East Elementary.
More than 60 Trumbull County children entered the contest, said Elizabeth Cianciola, a district educational specialist, who looked at them all.
The contest coincided with the Great American Cleanup, an annual litter pickup event, and many of the drawings followed a before-after motif, she said.
"Before, everything was dark," she said. "Then, they cleaned it up; it is nice and bright and happy. A lot of pictures had that."
Other winners: In Geauga County, Justin Hukill, a fifth-grader at Parkman Elementary School, won first, while Emily Duchscherer, a sixth-grader at Parkman Elementary, and Allie Lestock, a sixth-grader at St. Helen's School, were runners-up.
Ten honorable mentions from each county will also be awarded "recyclable content prizes" -- a tote bag made out of pop bottles and a pencil made from discarded denim, Cianciola said.
