YOUNGSTOWN -- Most people eligible to vote Tuesday opted to stay home. Turnout during an unusually slow primary was very low, officials reported. About 25 percent of eligible voters in Mahoning County cast ballots. In Columbiana County, 17 percent voted, and in Trumbull County, it was 31 percent.

STRUTHERS -- When told that his bitter rival had decided to resign as council president rather than spend another minute overseeing the body, Struthers council President-elect Danny Thomas Jr. had a one-word comment: "Cool." Defeated council President Michael Orenic said he was getting out of politics for good. "It's a messy business, and people can't tell the bad guys from the good guys," he said.
Disgruntled voter
LISBON -- One poll worker, on returning ballot boxes to the Columbiana County Board of Elections, told director John Payne that a voter at her polling place asked for an independent ballot after complaining he could not register for Ralph Nader's Green Party. "As soon as the state of Ohio certifies the Green Party for the ballot, I'll be sure it's on there," Payne said.
Library's lucky day
COLUMBIANA -- A jubilant Carol Cobbs, director of the Columbiana Public Library, said May 8 is apparently the library's lucky day. A bond issue for library construction in 1990 also passed May 8, she said.
