Springfield tops United in tourney
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Bobby Zitkovic hit and pitched Springfield High past United 11-2 in a Division III baseball tournament game Monday.
Zitkovic (5-1) threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts, and went 4-for-5, hitting a triple and double, and knocked in two RBIs.
The Tigers (19-3) will meet Girard Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Cene Park in a district semifinal game.
Top-seeded Springfield has won 15 of its last 16 games.
Also contributing to the 12-hit attack was Jim Schuler, with three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs.
Mark Long had a three-run homer in the seventh inning and Jason Sobnosky had two hits.
Jason Willison singled home two runs in the second inning for United.
Girard 3, Newton Falls 2: GIRARD -- Winning pitcher Mike Pearson (5-3) doubled in the seventh-inning to spark the Indians' three-run rally.
Elliott Steverson's single drove in Pearson for Girard's (14-6) first run.
After pinch-hitter Anthony Foutz walked, Joe Ponzio singled to score Steverson and freshman Dan O'Neill singled to bring home Foutz with the winning run.
