WARREN -- Members of all faiths are welcome at public prayer services May 15 at Blessed Sacrament Church before Ohio's scheduled execution of J.D. Scott and May 16 before the scheduled federal execution of Timothy McVeigh.
At 7 p.m. May 15, there will be evening prayer, followed by discussion of the death penalty, and a concluding meditative Taize (non-denominational) prayer at 9 p.m. On May 16, morning prayer is at 6:30 a.m., followed by the Taize prayer and silent meditation that concludes with morning Mass at 8:30 a.m.
Sebring water award
SEBRING -- The village's water system will be one of five statewide to be recognized for maintaining 100 percent compliance with the safe drinking water standards, the Safe Drinking Water Act and requirements of Ohio drinking water laws. Ohio EPA will present the awards for the state's outstanding public water systems Friday at Ohio EPA offices in Columbus. The other four honorees are Ironton, Middletown (Butler County), Ohio American Water Company (Tiffin), and Portsmouth.
Ohio fire conference
WARREN -- Local firefighters have begun preparations for the 2002 Ohio State Fire Conference in Trumbull County. At 7:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of every month, a committee composed of members of the county fire chiefs and police chiefs associations and fire auxiliary meet to discuss plans. Polling place open
GIRARD -- Voters whose precincts are in Prospect Street School cast their ballots in the school cafeteria today. Concerns about building safety do not extend to the area where the polls are located, Trumbull County Board of Elections officials said.
Retirements accepted
YOUNGSTOWN -- The board of education accepted the retirement of Lois E. Thornton, principal of Bennett Elementary School on Monday. She'll retire July 1. It also accepted the disability retirement of Janet Carpenter, who is supervisor of health professions at Choffin Career and Technical Center, retroactive to March 1.
Household waste
CANFIELD -- The Green Team, Mahoning County's recycling division, will collect household waste products Saturday at Canfield Fairgrounds. People with last names beginning with A through F should bring items from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., G-N from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and O-Z from 1 to 3 p.m. Acceptable items include paint, varnish, pesticide, motor oil, gas, propane tanks and lead acid batteries. Explosives, ammunition, tires and scrap metal will not be accepted.
Curb installation
CORTLAND -- City council approved an ordinance Monday night to hire Terreri Construction Co. of North Jackson to install curbs on six side streets.
Council will pay the construction company $97,200 for the work. Mayor Melissa Long, who was against the ordinance, said she thinks it is too costly to install curbing on side streets.
The side streets to be curbed this summer are Argali Place, Cheviot Place, Corriedale Street, Cricklewood Street, Karakul Street and Wae Trail.
Hermitage plan OK'd
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The city planning commission has approved a land development plan for a 5,000-square-foot warehouse on Broadway Road. The development plan was presented to the commission Monday by Hermitage Vinyl Products, a company that is new to the city. It will go before city commissioners for final approval.
The planning commission also approved a preliminary subdivision for additional land for the Eagle Point single-family residential development off Sample Road. The plan calls for 45 building lots to be known as Eagle Point North. Daniel Leali of West Middlesex is the developer. City commissioners must also approve the subdivision.
Bond refinancing
MERCER, Pa. -- Refinancing a 1997 bond issue that was borrowed to help pay for renovation of Mercer High School will save the school district $250,000 next year.
Superintendent Dr. Larry Connelly said the refinancing of the $6.95 million bond issue at a lower interest rate is structured so the district will realize the savings in the first year.
