PREP BASEBALL/SOFTBALL West Branch sweeps pair at Cafaro Field



The Warriors beat Springfield 12-8 and Crestview 6-2 Sunday.
NILES -- Don Close finished the day with five hits, while Todd Mast had four, including a home run, and six RBIs, as West Branch High defeated Springfield 12-8 and Crestview 6-2 in a pair of games at Cafaro Field Sunday.
Mast had three hits against Springfield, including his home run and a double, as the Warriors (13-10) scored seven runs in the first inning and survived a Springfield rally, which included a five-run sixth.
Josh Scott added two hits, including a triple, while Matt Sobotka doubled. Close, Drew Romigh and James Crutchley all singled twice.
Gary Weiznecker pitched 52/3 innings to earn the win.
Jim Schuler and Jason Sobnosky both had three hits for Springfield. Schuler tripled and doubled.
In the second game,. Close had three hits for the Warriors, while Josh Hurford doubled and singled.
Trevor Greenawalt pitched four innings, leaving with a 1-0 lead, with relief help from Crutchley.
Seth Antram had three hits and Josh Louk two for the Rebels.
Warren JFK 6, South Range 2: NILES -- Warren JFK got all of its runs in the bottom of the second inning at Cafaro Field Saturday.
The Eagles (11-6) sent eight batters to the plate and got a two run double from Justin Eschman and a two-run single from Elliott Musick.
South Range (15-5) had a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Besides the double, Eschman hit two singles, scored once and stole a base.
Softball: AKRON -- Canfield's Lindsay Gaudiose (10-5) had a no-hitter through six innings, finishing with a six-hitter, as Canfield defeated Akron Hoban 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Hoban won the second game 3-2.
Gaudiose scored the winning run on a single by Stephanie Mistovich. Gaudiose and Julie Playforth each hit two singles and stole a base.
In the second game, Canfield's Megan Turocy (4-4) in a losing cause, scattered four hits.
Kelly Williams of the Cardinals hit a double, single and scored twice, while Playforth hit three singles and drove in a run.
