WARREN -- Did you know the CEOs of Compaq Computer Co. and DaimlerChrysler Capital Services are Warren high school alumni?
They were among 10 of the city's most distinguished alumni, in town to be inducted into the school's hall of fame Saturday.
Ranging from the graduating classes of 1944 to 1985, the alumni join 69 other inductees chosen over the past nine years.
Their achievements have been in unique and sometimes surprising fields, encompassing everything from NASA to the Navy. They are musicians, professors, engineers and military veterans.
Darryl White, 37, a recording artist and trumpet professor at the University of Nebraska, was among the youngest of the inductees.
Released album: The Lincoln, Neb., resident released an album called "Ancient Memories" in 1999 with his Darryl White Jazz Quintet.
The 1981 alumnus was modest about his induction. "I didn't really think I would be considered for the hall of fame," he said.
"They all come back, that's what makes it nice," said Frank Calvin, who co-founded the hall.
They've come from as far as India -- like the president of General Electric last year -- and Portland, Maine, where Richard Haupt traveled from this year.
Haupt, 74, graduated in 1944 and became one of the founders of hydrography in the Navy. His studies of the Persian Gulf from 1950 to 1952 helped create the maps used in the Persian Gulf War.
Sometimes, the graduate's reach has stayed within Ohio.
"I sometimes wonder where the city of Cleveland would be without Warren, Ohio," said Calvin.
They'd be without Haupt's classmate John Gherlein, 74, a retired lawyer who was named one of America's best lawyers in 1989 for his work in bank, corporate and community law.
Gherlein, a Cleveland resident since 1951, said he was honored to be inducted and took the opportunity to drive through his old community.
Nominations: Calvin said he knows other graduates have similar achievements, but people need to nominate them so he knows who they are and where to find them.
Nominations can be sent to the Warren Harding Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame Committee, Warren Board of Education, 261 Monroe N.W., Warren 44483.
The deadline for 2002 nominations is Nov. 9.
