Poster contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- St. Elizabeth Health Center is sponsoring a children's poster contest in May, which is National Trauma Awareness Month.
One poster will be selected from each group: Kindergarten to grade 2, grades 3 to 5; grades 6 to 8, and grades 9 to 12. Each poster must convey one of three themes: "Helmets are Good for Your Head," "Seat Belts Save Lives," or "It's Simple Math: Guns + Violence = Death."
Posters must be no smaller than 8 1/2 by 11 inches and no larger than 18 by 24 inches. Posters should not be matted or framed. The back of each poster should have the contestant's name, age, home address and phone number, school, grade and teacher. Posters may be in paint, pencil, crayon, markers or chalk. Posters can be dropped off at the information desk at St. Elizabeth's or mailed to its trauma services at 1044 Belmont Ave. 44501-1790 by May 18.
Each winner will receive $25. The posters will be displayed at the hospital the week of May 28. Call (330) 480-2986.
Breast cancer checks
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Encore plus Program at the YWCA in Youngstown will be host to the Mammovan from 1 to 5 p.m. May 15. The program provides breast cancer screenings and helps refer Mahoning County women to low or no-cost mammograms. Transportation is available by appointment. Financial assistance is available. Birthing class
CANFIELD -- Beginnings ... Parent Education and Services will have a one-day Lamaze course from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Ursuline Education Center. The cost is $55. Call (330) 755-0605.
Red Cross training
WARREN -- The American Red Cross Trumbull County Chapter is offering training programs at its Warren office, including:
*Workplace Training: Standard First Aid, from 6 to 9 p.m. May 14 and 16. The cost is $35.
*CPR for the Professional Rescuer, 6 to 10:30 p.m. May 15 and 17. The cost is $45.
*Preventing Disease Transmission, 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 29. The cost is $20.

Coalition meetings
CANFIELD -- The Valley HIV Coalition: Care Meeting is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the Ursuline Center in Canfield. The coalition is a planning body for HIV prevention, care and support services in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Jefferson counties. The CARE meeting addresses outpatient health care issues and support services.
Community safety day
POLAND -- Woodworth Church of the Brethren will have a community safety day from 9 a.m. to noon May 19. Representatives of police, fire, medical and other safety groups will present information. There will be health screenings, blood pressure checks and child fingerprinting. Call (330) 758-3143.
Premed programscheduled for summer
Forum Health is accepting applications for a summer premed program scheduled July 9-Aug. 2 at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. The program is designed to expose students to the overall operation of an acute-care general hospital under the direct supervision of medical staff and department supervisors. Accreditation surveys
The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations will conduct accreditation surveys Wednesday through Friday at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren and May 14-17 at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, to evaluate compliance with nationally established Joint Commission standards for quality of care or safety of environment issues. Talk With a Doc
Humility of Mary Health Partners will conduct Talk With a Doc programs at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Health Center, Warren, where Dr. Franklin Rizer will discuss cochlear implants; and at 7 p.m. May Thursday at St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, where Dr. Nicholas Proia, pulmonologist, will discuss sleep disorders. Skin cancer screenings
The American Cancer Society, in conjunction with the American Academy of Dermatology, Forum Health and Humility of Mary Health partners, is offering free skin cancer screenings. As the ankle turns
Basketball players wearing shoes with air cells in the heels were four times more likely to injure their ankles, found a study reported in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Researchers suggested that air cells make the heels less stable. The Australian study of more than 10,000 mostly recreational players also found that players who did not stretch before playing were more than 2.5 times as likely to injure their ankles, and those with previous ankle injuries were almost five times as likely to do it again.
