The deadline to file as an independent for the general election is Monday.
LORDSTOWN -- Two Democrats are the only people who filed to run for four open village council seats in the Tuesday primary.
Incumbent Richard Biggs and challenger D. James London were the only candidates to file; no Republicans entered the primary.
Councilman Richard Morgan, 449 Carson Salt Springs Road, and challenger Stanley Zoldan, 613 Brunstetter Road S.W., both have filed to run as independents. Councilman Donald Reider and Councilwoman Karen Jones both said they plan to run as independents. The filing deadline for independents to run in the general election is Monday.
No candidates filed to run in the primary for two seats on the village's board of public affairs. Incumbent Chester H. Phillips, 1956 Chester Ave. S.W., filed to run as an independent. Steve Pelo's term on the board also expires at the end of this year.
Participating in growth: Biggs, a councilman since 1994, said he is seeking re-election because he wants to be part of the continued growth of the village.
Council members, "over the past eight years, have accomplished a great deal to enhance our village, both in terms of growth through businesses and improvement for the village residents," he said.
Biggs also served on the board of education from 1985 to 1992 and ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1999.
London, who has served on the village's board of zoning appeals since October 1999, was a member of the public affairs board from 1984 through 1991.
"I believe in this community and want to serve all citizens, young and elderly," London said. "I want to promote a positive image of this village."
