MARIETTA
Matt DeSalvo, junior pitcher from New Castle Union High, was named Ohio Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. DeSalvo struck out 11 batters in six innings, to break his OAC record for strikeouts in one season with 140. DeSalvo also recently broke two school records for single-game and career strikeouts. He leads the OAC in strikeouts with 140 (16.8 per game), has the best record (12-1), and is No. 2 with a 1.68 ERA.
WESTMINSTER
The football team, which posted an 8-2 record last year, will play a nine-game schedule this season. The Titans start off with road games at Walsh University, Sept. 8 and at Geneva College, Sept. 15. Westminster's home opener will be with West Liberty State College, Sept. 22 and the Titans will entertain Washington and Jefferson, Sept. 29. After an away contest at Bethany College, Oct. 6, Westminster will play host to Thiel College Oct. 13 and Grove City College, Oct. 20. The Titans will then travel to Gannon University, Oct. 27 and Waynesburg College, Nov. 10.
Mohawk High School's Justin Crum will play basketball at Westminster. A guard at Mohawk, Crum averaged 20 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. He was two-time All-Section while earning first team honors for baseball and football and being voted "Most Athletic."
GANNON
Sophomore Heather Loomis, a Jackson-Milton High graduate, is ranked seventh nationally in saves with four in NCAA Division II softball statistics. Gannon is 38-12 and ranked 25th in the nation.
ASHLAND
James Phillips, a 112-pound senior wrestler from Howland High, has verbally committed to Ashland University. Phillips is a three-time state qualifier, finishing third last season. He was named a high school All-American by placing eighth in the Seniors National Championship last month at the University of Delaware. He also won a national tournament in Birmingham, Ala., as a junior. A team captain who holds Howland's all-time wins record (120), Phillips will be a member of the Junior Olympics team in July. The son of Brad and Terri Phillips, James plans to major in business management and minor in communications.
THIEL
Sophomore A.H. Davis of Boardman was named the Most Valuable Player of the men's basketball team. Davis started 22 of 25 games, averaging 16.7 points and 4.6 rebounds. He was the team's high scorer in eight games and high rebounder in four. His season high was 27 points against Mount Union and Pitt-Bradford. Thiel finished the season with an 11-14 record, including 5-3 in the President's Athletic Conference.
URSULINE
Ursuline High School senior Erin Zubal has found a way to play four more years for Ursuline. Ursuline College in Cleveland that is. Zubal, the starting pitcher on the Irish softball team the last two seasons, will play basketball at Ursuline College in the winter and will play on the inaugural softball team there in 2002. She is undecided on a major.
