SHARON, PA. Officials determine fire's cause

Neighbors rescued a cat and firefighters were able to save a pet rabbit from the smoke-filled house.
SHARON, Pa. -- A discarded cigarette was listed as the cause of a fire that did extensive damage to a home at 484 Prindle Street shortly after 10 a.m. Friday.
No one was home at the house Jeff and Jean Marino share with their two sons, a daughter and a granddaughter when the fire was spotted by a neighbor.
Uriah Templeton, who lives across the street, said he had just returned home from the bank when he noticed smoke coming from the second floor of the two-story Marino residence.
Templeton said he didn't know if anyone was home and he rushed into his house to call 911.
Found no one home: Sharon police were first on the scene and checked the house, determining no one was home.
Fire Capt. Michael Donato arrived on the scene with the first fire crew and said he kicked the front door open to attack the blaze.
Most of the flames were confined to the front, second-story bedroom where the blaze started, although the entire house suffered heat, smoke and water damage. Some of the vinyl siding melted from the heat.
A neighbor had rescued the family cat, and Donato said firefighters saved a pet rabbit kept in another second-floor bedroom.
A state police fire marshal checked the scene and confirmed that the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette, Donato said.
Members of the Marino family reached the scene around 10:40 a.m. after most of the flames had been extinguished.
Donato said the loss is insured and no one was injured fighting the blaze. No loss estimate was available.
