36 from Valley file suit
YOUNGSTOWN -- Thirty-six residents of Mahoning and Trumbull counties have filed a lawsuit against 80 companies across the world involving asbestos-related illnesses. The 83-page suit was filed Friday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court by a Cincinnati law firm. It seeks unspecified damages for the plaintiffs, who all once worked in jobs in which they were exposed to asbestos. They seek unspecified damages.
Some of the plaintiffs have required domestic help, and others have required nursing care as a result of their asbestos-related injuries, the suit says.
About half the companies named as defendants are from Cleveland. One is from Australia and another is from England. The only local company named in the suit is Insul Company of East Palestine.
The suit says that the plaintiffs all worked at least 10 years in asbestos-exposed environments, and that the defendants were negligent in failing to inform them or protect them against the health risks involved.
It says the companies had information proving that asbestos was harmful, but conspired to deliberately withhold the information. Instead, the defendants put out false information about the dangers of asbestos exposure.
